Take a walk around the North Laine. Not to be confused with The Lanes, which are horribly touristy and full of expensive antique shops and nasty boutiques. No, check out the North Laine for the true spirit of Brighton - fun, off the wall, arty, diverse. Surprising and exciting. Some great cafes and pubs too. Those huge seagulls sat on chimney tops and cawing to each other across the wind.
The first monument is to commemorate the men that gave their lives in the first and second world wars. It sits behind the Egyptian Monument in an island garden, just over the road from the Brighton Pavilion on the main road.
I like this monument, it kind of looks kind of space age and quite mysterious in the dusk of the early evening...
The second war memorial is a beautiful monument that is like a Cleopatra's needle. It's situated in the memorial garden in front of Brighton's palace pavilion too. It was erected by the 1st 8th Royal Sussex reg 'To the memory of their comrades who were killed in action 1882-1884' in Egypt.
Well i couldnt think what else to put this under, but i know that whenever im on the road in other places, im always thinkin im seeing all this stuff, but my fitness is going down the drain, so im thinkin, ok this is my home town and im gunna write a tip for people.
St Regents pool/gym is just next to the library in brighton town centre, and is nice spacious pool where you can do classes, diving, or just general swimming. The gym overlooks the pool, which is cool if you go if you go with a friend and you wanna do different stuff.
Adults are about 3 pound for a swim, im not sure how much the gym is, and adult only swimming is on mondays, wednesdays, fridays and sunday evenings. Ladies only is on tuesday and thursday mornings until 10,30. I find it nicer to swim in the morning with just the ladies, as its less busy, and i can just get on with my swim. If you're headin to the gym, i guess shorts/tracky bottoms and a tshirt, whatever is comfortable. If its the pool, a swimsuit, goggles if u want them.
Theres hot communal showers and a changing room with cubicles for those of us who are shyer getting changed.
Bodiam Castle is very much a 'fairy tale' castle. It stands bang in the middle of a lake and is reached by an excepionally long drawbridge. Only the outer walls and towers reall reamain - the castle looks a lot more complete from the outside than it does on the inside! You can get up to the tops of the towers, though, for a good view of the Sussex countryside.

Like the very best antiquarian bookshops, Colin Page has an impressively decent stock of books and a large number of cubby holes in which to search for them. Customers walking in off the street need not fear being sneered at for paying the few pence asked for a used paperback from the outside stall. Similarly, those in search of older tomes can feel free to ask for specific volumes they've been hopelessly searching the world for - the owners/shop assistants will not bite and you may be lucky! Browsing is more than acceptable and - like an iceberg - there is more shop below than is visible above. Plenty of stock is situated in the basement at the bottom of a splendid cast iron spiral staircase and more valuable books located in an assortment of 'back rooms' can, under certain circumstances - dealer, good customer, knowledgeable collector - be viewed upon request. I've been graced with this honour for many years now, though frankly I'm still amazed that I deserve it!
By the way, don't bother asking for Colin Page. Although still with us, he retired from ownership of the shop a few years back and younger owners (I use the term advisedly) are at the helm - and, may I add, very decent chaps they are too. I hate to praise the blighters but this really is one of the top antiquarian bookshops in the United Kingdom. Books, paperbacks, volumes, tomes, manuscripts etc etc From under a pound to thousands!
