Brighton Rock....the sweet....not the book

by KastleKonfusion

I might not have taken notice of Brighton if not for the documentary showing the making of the Brighton Rock. However, I couldnt find any information online as to where in Brighton this sweet is made.

I'd love to visit the shop when we fly to UK from Singapore in September, even better if we could have a factory visit to see in person how this sweet is made.

Any VTers gone for such tours or could provide a lead?

This page will give you lots of info about rock, which is a traditional British seaside sweet: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A4552841 . You'll certainly find lots of 'rock shops' on the sea front, but I can't find anywhere which offers a visit. There are some in other seaside places, such as Great Yarmouth and Blackpool, but they're too far away. It's possible Brighton rock isn't actually made there anymore, but produced by one of the larger confectionery factories elsewhere.

Thanks J, you are probably right about Brighton Rock not made in Brighton any more. We were planning to visit Brighton precisely for the sweet factory and to buy some to be shipped back here for friends.

So far, my online research has pulled up only 2 results:

1. E & M Hames / Sweet Thoughts, The Chocolate Factory, Hawthorn Road, Skegness, Lincolnshire, PE25 3TD (http://www.sweetthoughts.co.uk)

2. Hair Raising Rock, Southwold, Suffolk. England
(http://www.rockcandy.co.uk/)

Have anyone tried the sweet from Hair Raising Rock? I read from the site with great interest in the Boozy Range - whiskey and soda *yum yum*. Hoping to get them in London, Wembley or Cardiff instead of having to go all the way to Suffolk.

You are most likely to get rock at a seaside town. I can't find anything in the places you mention; perhaps you could take a daytrip to Brighton anyway (it's supposed to be an interesting place, though I haven't been there) or possibly to Barry Island or Porthcawl when you are in Cardiff? Rock has always been associated with the traditional English seaside, and isn't really something anyone buys when not on holiday. A seaside rock shop will have traditional sticks, but also a huge variety of other shapes; egg and bacon on a plate perhaps, or dummies (comforters), or even rather ruder things. Sounds as if a trip to the seaside will be required!

I don't think there is any shop left for making those here in Brighton.

Travel Tips for Brighton

The seafront promenade

by HORSCHECK

Stroll along Brightons's seafront promenade or the pebbly beach between the entertaining Palace Pier and the damaged West Pier. The walk is only about half a mile long. Enjoy the busy cafes, bars, amusements and entertainments.

hmmm...you can buy t-shirts...

by Miffy

hmmm...you can buy t-shirts with this shop's name written on them if you really want 'pussy' written across your chest. They also sell a wonderful array of cheap and pricey kitsch from around the world.

Packing List

by ZoeB

If you are back packing then it is fine to bring a ruck sack. If you are on business then a suitcase is probably more applicable. Bring Warm clothes, umbrellas and hats and scarves especially in the winter as it gets windy. If you are coming from somewhere with a hot climate you will really feel the cold, I warn you!! It is easy to get hold of photographic equipment, Boots and Jessops which are on Weston Road are the best places for film etc

Battle Abbey was established...

by steventilly

Battle Abbey was established by William The Conqueror and the alter of the abbey's church was placed at the spot where King Harold fell. The gatehouse and surrounding walls are largely intact, but the abbey itself is riuned. You can take a self guided audio tour of the battle site, which is quite interesting.

Chinese Supermarket

by Designerartgirl about Chinese Supermarket (can not remember name)

This is one of the few shops in brighton where you can actually buy asian cusine which you cant find in a regular supermarket. I was surprised to see things like "maggi" and stirfry sauces and things which id known in malaysia.. :) a joy to have in brighton.

They also sell, miniture chillies, and lots of them as well... i think a pack of like 100 chillies is like £1 or something... asian bits and bobs! depends what u want to buy.
