DEER OH DEER!

Living so close I've never had any reason to stay here but looking at some online comments I found I think that might be to my advantage. The White Hart is housed within a delightful building directly opposite the similarly imposing Crown Court. You will soon know whether you've wandered into the wrong place - the sound of a cast iron cell door slamming behind you is generally a dead giveaway. The Hart has been a Lewes landmark for many years - since the 16th century to be exact - but rumours would suggest that the centuries have left it needing a little love and attention. When I last dined there (many years back) it was very traditional and redolent of the roast beef of Old England...chums who have eaten more recently had their meal accompanied by an organist. Not alas, a madly gothic church type but a Bontempi effort. The hotel has opened an health spa and swimming pool but do note that the club is a shared facility also open to paying members of the public. To be honest you need to explore this one further...'expensive for what it is' might be fair comment. By all accounts, a safer bet might be Shelley's Hotel which you'll find further up the High Street
