The picture shows the Balkerne Gate, with the Mercury Theatre behind, and "Jumbo" and the Town Hall in the distance. The first three are within 100 yards of each other, but of course Jumbo dominates !
I have written separate tips about the first three - and will add one about the Town Hall later.
In 1806 Jane Taylor, resident of 11 and 12 West Stockwell Street, Colchester, published 'The Star' in the book Rhymes for the Nursery. It was later combined with the tune of the French melody Ah! Vous dirais-je, Maman and the resulting rhyme named Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Over the last 200 years it has grown to become one of the world's most enduring nursery rhymes and has been parodied in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
The Colchester region stretches from beautiful Dedham Vale and Constable country in the north east to the yachting and wildlife havens of Mersea Island and the Colne estuary to the south.
Colchester is Britain's oldest recorded town - documented since it was the Celtic stronghold of Camulodunum. Archaeological evidence shows a settlement existed here 3,000 years ago. Today, most of Colchester town centre lies within the ancient boundaries of Camulodunum.
