Travel Tips for Colchester

History!

by Nmurfet

Colchester is rammed full of historical places of interest, the Roman Castle being the obvious one, for all the information you need on the attractions and sites to see in Colchester use this webpage:www.colchester.uk.com/history.htm or try this one for some photos: www.beenthere-donethat.org.uk/colchester.html. The latter site also has plenty of unofficial info. and pics of the rest of the UK too! Graduation 2003: Spent at the University of Essex on a beautiful summer's day in Wivenhoe park. Then a meal with all my family at the George Hotel in Colchester High Street before a late night stroll in Castle park to see Colchester Castle lit up in spotlights. Fantastic!

Dutch Quarter

by PeterVancouver

The Dutch Quarter in Colchester is in the area bounded by West Stockwell Street, Northgate Street, Maidenburgh Street and High Street
Between 1550 and 1600, a large number of weavers and clothmakers from Flanders emigrated to Colchester and the surrounding areas where they were affectionately referred to as the 'Dutch'. They were famed for the production of Bays and Says cloth. An area in Colchester town centre is still known as the Dutch Quarter and many buildings there date from the Tudor period. During this period Colchester was one of the most prosperous wool towns in England.

Colchester ~ I came, I saw, I left

by aaaarrgh

http://www.camulos.com/history/history.htm

I invaded Colchester 1,963 years after Julius Ceasar but, unlike him, came by train and, also unlike him, left after 3 hours.

"Recycled Castle"

Colchester Castle can be found just off the High Street in the town centre. It is surrounded by the green, leafy Castle Gardens, which stretch down to the River Colne.

The Castle was built by the Norman invaders of Britain at the end of the 11th century. It was constructed on Roman foundations and used bricks and tiles from Roman buildings. Hence it looks extremely decorative, almost good enough to eat.... sluuurp!!

"Britains Oldest Recorded Town"

I've lived here for about five months now. Not really a place that foreign tourists would be likely to visit but there's plenty enough for a day trip. Visit the roman castle, the zoo, the ruins of St Botolphs priory and take a stroll around the park on a summers day. As far as nightlife goes it's not bad given the towns relatively small size. The shopping's ok as well with all your standard UK high street faves: Next,River Island, FCUK, Virgin etc.
Perhaps the best thing, however, is how easy it is to get away. There's good rail links to London, Ipswich and Norwich and ok ones to Peterborough and Cambridge and buses to get everywhere else locally , including Stansted Airport (they're improving the road to Stansted as well which should cut journey time in a car to well under 1 hour.
