The Hotel Continental

Not actually in Harwich as such but close enough.

If this is the future for all those run-down ramshackle British seaside guest houses with their saggy beds and unpreposessing decor then that future is pretty bright - as bright perhaps as the canary yellow of the exterior of this place.

Perhaps I was fortunate to have been upgraded to room 9 with its huge bed and sea views (plural as I had two floor-to-ceiling windows leading out to the balcony), but even if I hadn't had such a nice room everything else about this hotel was suitably impressive.

Reception was friendly, being shown up to the room always a nice touch, and service throughout personal and pleasant. The hotel's decor and furnishings are tastefully individual with no trace of designer-led blandness and you have a choice of public areas downstairs including a friendly locals bar, the restaurant and also a residents lounge.

Wi-fi is free throughout (and works perfectly) which is another plus and generally this is a hotel which actually exceeds its rating. No faults whatsoever and I would definitely stay here again.

Unique Quality: If you are fortunate enough to have a sea view room then views are great, especially if you catch the sun rising over the bay. Also useful, for me at any rate, is the friendly night porter dispensing beers until whenever!!
