Restaurant with one sitting

by CdnJane

A number of years ago... ok, about 15yrs ago... just a few... some friends took me to a restaurant in the Southend-on-Sea area, or Leigh on Sea... that only had one sitting a night. They brought around to the tables a huge terrine of soup, there was a salad "bar", and then the starters, and entrees were all trotted out for you to see the options, as were the desserts. It was incredibly good food, and was about 20 pounds stirling per person. Reservations had to be made long in advance. Does anyone know if this restaurant still exists... the name of which escapes me... or know of any other similar ones in the Greater London area?

That sounds like a good deal.
The only one I can suggest in London that has rolling service is Simpsons on the Strand.
It is alot more money though.
Good luck, fun and good restaurants are to be treasured

Aloha all. You mean Simpsons on Strand is still there? Had a wonderful lunch there in seventies, and when told him it was better than anything we could find in Paris, he broke out in the largest smile I've ever seen on an adult! Back then wasn't too expensive, either. Thanks for the update!

Ciao, meow ^..^~~~

Thanks... I'll have to go through those and see if I see one that rings a bell. Lost track of my friends after they divorced, so can't go that route either :(

a white mini skirt and white stilettos are a must! especially if planning to experience the nightlife. St. Tropez, or cheaper fake tan, is also an essential buy as even the most naturally tanned person will look pasty white in comparison to southend's finest.

Southend Museums

by gabriellefox

The Southend Museums Service comprises four buildings, the Central Museum and Planetarium, Southchurch Hall, Prittlewell Priory and the Beecroft Art Gallery.

These house diverse collections covering local social and human history, and as well as a fine collection of works of art.

Entry to all the museum branches is free, although there is a small charge for visiting the Southend Planetarium, situated within the Central Museum

The Museum organises many events and exhibitions, details of which can be found within this website, as well as exciting schools activities, family events and life long learning opportunities.

South East Essex College

by gabriellefox

South East Essex College relocated to its brand new campus in September 2004. Located next to Southend Central railway station and the High Street, the campus replaces the London Road and Carnarvon Road centres, which are now closed. Queens Road studio remains in use by Health and Beauty students, and East Street continues to offer adult IT and community courses.

Facilities at the new campus include:

26,000m² of learning space to house over 12,000 students
an atrium accommodating a 250-seat auditorium, 'floating' dining areas, viewing balconies and attractive social and meeting areas a fully-equipped general library with IT facilities and private study areas a café open to the public alongside the entrance to the building (coming soon) state-of-the-art equipment and facilities in each learning area.

Day trip to Southend

"The Pier"

Apparently the longest pier in the world and currently being rebuilt after parts of it were burnt down.
At the end of the pier:
* an RNLI shop, selling all sorts of souvenirs depicting the good work of the lifeboat men
* lots of people fishing
* Punch and Judy shows

"The Beach"

A really long and sandy stretch of beach fringed with shops selling icecreams and beach paraphernalia, mini golf and catering for an eclectic, multicultural mix of families and sunbathers.

"Food"

Typical British seaside specialities:

* Whelks
* Fish 'n' chips
* Candyfloss
* Icecream
* Beer
