Oak Lodge Luxury B&B Hotel: Ideal for Stansted Airport

Excellent accommodation, excellent location and good value. A very good choice indeed for Stansted Airport.

We found their website oaklodgebb quite by chance on the internet, after recently staying there we would very highly recommend Oak Lodge to anyone wishing to stay overnight travelling via the airport or exploring North Essex and surrounding area.

Oak Lodge is a quality Tudor style luxury bed & breakfast set in two acres of secluded gardens on the borders of Essex and Hertfordshire and more importantly conveniently close to London Stansted Airport just 2 miles.

We had lovely clean comfortable and very nicely decorated rooms, the service was very friendly and our freshly cooked traditional English breakfast delicious.

Safe parking was available in the grounds for our car while we were away and they arranged taxis for the short trip to airport, what more could you want.

If you want somewhere relaxing to stay close to Stansted Aiport STAY HERE, don't stay in one of the big airport hotels that are like the airport terminals they serve where you are completely anonymous and just a number.

We would certainly stay here again I can really recommend Oak Lodge.

Radisson SAS

it's 2 minutes walk from the terminal building, it's brand new and really modern and nice

Radisson Stansted: Smart & Very Convenient for the Airport

A very smart new hotel situated just a few minutes walk from the airport terminal.

Unique Quality: Everything you'd expect from a 5 star hotel. Health spa & 3 restaurants - 1 which is Tapas Restaurant (see separate tip). A special feature of this hotel is the tall glass wine tower (see my picture). Situated in the central bar, you can watch the agile wine angels glide up & retrieve your chosen bottle. If you seat yourself strategically whilst in the surrounding restaurants, you can also watch the acrobatics while dining!

Stansted Airport terminal building: Sleeping in the terminal building

From late afternoon to the early morning hours, this airport becomes what may be Europe's largest dormitory. Many people book a combination of two cheap flights arriving late and leaving Stansted on the following day. So you get the cheap flight and can save one night of accomodation! This is also a possibility to meet other travellers as you will find hundreds of people doing the same every night. Stansted airport is a clean and safe place and should be considered if you do not care about comfort..

Unfortunately, the number of benches without armrests has decreased during the past few years. There are still a few of them, but you will have to be there very early to get them. Of course, there are many other possibilities to get some sleep. Make your own bed out of a chair and a baggage cart, find your own creative way to sleep on the benches with armrests or bring your own inflatable bed with you. Everything is allowed as long as you follow house rules and do not disturb the staff or other travellers.

Unique Quality: Most of the benches are located in front of the left luggage counter between check-in zone F and J, a few more are located near the entrances and next to the international arrivals. The far left side of the airport (zone K, looking from landside) is also a popular sleeping area, especially for people with sleeping pads or inflatable beds. However, it is not recommended to sleep there when flights to Israel or the USA are leaving. Most times, check-in for these flights take place at zone K and these are connected with higher security measures.

De Salis Hotel: Tacky and amateurish!!

Stayed here for one night before a recent trip and I must admit the web site looked good! Unfortunately it did not come up to scratch! It is not finished and although we were told it had only recently opened we did not expect to have small towels, no shower curtain, phones that do not connect to the outside world and cheap tacky furniture!! There were no fire instructions in the rooms and the reception staff were .scruffy.
We were told that on arrival back at the airport we were to ring and someone would meet us in 5 minutes!! 33 minutes late and with no apology the driver turned up. We even had to pay for that!!
This hotel had a lot to learn if it is to compete with the others around the airport. I for one would not stay again.

Radisson Stansted: 3 Minutes from hotel to teminal....under cover

This newly opened hotel is certainly the place to stay if travelling from Stansted. The rooms are tastefully furnished and comfortable.
The hotel has 3 restaurants. The Tapas restaurant was authentic and the food well prepared.
The main feature of the hotel is a huge wine tower set in a central bar area .It is able to take 4000 bottles of wine. There are wine 'angels' who climb on ropes to get the wine down and they perform
on the ire. A god gimic but I noticed it kept the men entertained!!

Unique Quality: There is a fitness centre and 3 restaurants.
Breakfast can be taken in the room and was good value for money.

SAS Radisson: Watch the flying babes !

For several months past, Sourbugger thought they were building an extension to the terminal at Stansted - but he was wrong : the new 500 room SAS Radisson opened in October 2004.

Whilst some may admire the stunning views from the windows (OK, I lied you can watch endless Ryanair flights arrive over a boring bit of Essex) the hotel looks set to clean up.

Unique Quality: The Central atrium of the hotel is in effect a food court (see seperate tip) which is dominated by a Las-Vegas style 'Wine tower'.

The 13 meter high contraption is loaded with thousands of bottles of wine, encased in a glass shell.

When you order a bottle an 'Wine Angel', although I prefer 'Wine Babe', glides up on a system of acrobatic pullies to retireve your desired bottle. The apparatus was origianlly developed for the show at the Millenium dome - at least they have found a good use for it now.

Very theatrical, very Las Vegas, very Kitsch - but great fun.
