Stansted airport has nothing much around it. It is a huge site and there is nothing within walking distance, apart from airport buildings, roads, grass, car parks and millions of rabbits.

Of course it is perfectly safe.

You could take bus 308 to Bishops' Stortford, which is a pleasant little town about 15/20 minutes from the airport.

for timetables.

Don't know the fare.

If you have a whole day you might want to consider Audley End, a lovely old house with superb gardens, owned by English heritage. It is only 12 minutes by train and I can tell you from personal experience it is a great place for photos.

Website here

For travel, as always, use this website.

http://nationalrail.co.uk/

You will need to type Stansted airport and Audles Yend as your stations.

VT does not find Audley End so I put my tips on my Saffron Walden page, which is the nearest town. Here is the link.

Hope this assists,

Travel Tips for Stansted

sleeping in stansted airport.

by cachaseiro

if you have a departure early in the morning from stansted airport then it's no problem sleeping in the airport.
hundreds of people spend the night there every night in order to catch their early flights.
when i spend the night there, there were dozens of people crashing on the chairs and on the floor in their sleeping bags.

if you wanna have a drink or a snack then most cafes stay open all night long in stansted airport too.
a very good service that i would like to have in other airports around the world.
being able to have a snack while waiting for a flight connection makes the whole experience a lot more pleasant.

Local villages, a stone's throw away

The ancient village of Takeley lies less than a couple of miles from the terminal, yet very few people even know that it exists. It at least makes for a change of scenery if you are stuck at the airport for longer than you expected.

This is due in part to the poor signposting, probably done on purpose.

The village strung out along the road features a couple of pubs, an anique shop or two and some nicely half-timbered buildings.

It also features a wealth of signs aimed at trying to stop the expansion of the airport.

Takeley is actually an ancient parish, consisting of many hamlets. It is mentioned in the ?Domesday Book? of 1086. During an archaeological dig at nearby Stansted airport, evidence was found of a Neolithic settlement, dating between 4,500 and 2,000BC. The A120 is the old Roman road Stane Street East.

It can be approached off the main roundabout with the M11 at the service station (look for the little sign) or from the roundabout at the entrance to the short stay car park. Just turn away from the airport and turn right at the fork. It's then about a mile down the road and right again at the traffic lights.

There is also a nice little pub called 'The Ash', with a tradional-type menu. It is so close to the airport you can see the planes land from the lounge window. If you head to the long-term car park, and keep going, it is about a further mile on the right.

One night in Stansted

"...and the world's your Oyster"

Stansted may be just an airport, but it is an airport like no other. This is the center of european low-cost flying and can be considered as a hub for backpackers and other independet travellers. Europe's three largest low-cost airlines, Ryanair, Easyjet and Air Berlin serve a huge number of cities out of Stansted and are supplied by many other low-cost carriers like SkyEurope, flyglobespan or Transavia. This offers you the possibility to reach almost any point in Europe for just a few bucks.

Stansted has become a fix point in my travel plans during the past few years and has helped me to save time and money. So why don't you check out my tips on low-cost flying or about killing time in Stansted?

"Stansted Airport"

Stansted in Essex has in recent months been hampered with roadworks but when we were last here they seemed to have cleared a lot.
We normally stay at The Hilton the night before we fly but we have also stayed at Downs Hall a few miles from the airport.
The airport itself is efficiently run and has a few eating and drinking places to while away the time if waiting for a flight.
Newly opened is the SAS Raddison hotel (see seperate tip)
Budget airlines such as Easyjet, Ryanair and Air Berlin all use the airport at Sansted.

Airport but there are some nice places locally

"Why are there so few hotels there"

Stansted airport is a really nice airport to fly from, but there is one drawback.

The pink elephant airport car park requires a transfer bus to get to the terminal and the parking is certainly not cheap . . . if you have a Ryanair bargain you might find the parking costs you more.

There is also a lack of hotels nearby, with only the Hilton on site and that still needs transport to transfer to the terminal.
