Travel Tips for Bourton on the Water

Boats races down the stream

by angiebabe

Our group was there one lovely summery Saturday early evening and the locals were seriously gettting right into boat races down the stream in the middle of the village - that is little boats made of all sorts of bits and pieces!

Guys in our group rushed into the local grocery store and bought some boxes of cereal and and things with lids to make cardboard boats to take part - a lot of fun going on amongst the participants and audience!

Model village...fact and figures

by lou31

The houses and gardens are set in great detail. Built in one ninth scale it is highly accurate in respect to the actual town.
It opened on the day of King George VI's coronation in 1937.
The stone comes from the same quarries that the towns houses were built from and about 200 tons has gone into the model. Work in ongoing and they regularly repair and up date it. Even down to the displays in the shop windows as businesses change hands.
The gardens are full of colour and most of the trees are part of the originals plantings. Interestingly there are no bonsai trees. The horse chestnuts don't flower but the apple and prunus frequently produce a miniature harvest.

Cottage of nature

by kenyneo

Dont you like to live in such a cottage ? I always thought its really nice to have these red leaves adorning a cottage ..just makes it more organic ...bringing nature closer to us or vice versa....

sometimes I thought the cottage is made of leaves ...or is it ? well, afterall 5cr" its the mind that makes the difference - shakespeare

Model Village

hear ye hear ye ...
A giant come to see...
A small village indeed...
But beautiful beyond fantasy...
If you walk around and breath ...
the fresh air that can be ...
come and see ...
just for me and thee...

The Venice of the Cotswolds

by Britannia2

"Possibly England prettiest village"

On my visit to the Cotswolds and I came across what I think must be England's prettiest village. It is easy to see why it is called the Venice of the Cotswolds - the small River Windrush flows through the village and is crossed by small picturesque bridges. The village is popular with people from all over the world - there were many Japanese people there on the day of my visit. Full of cafes, restaurants and gift shops it not a cheap and nasty tourist village and despite the crowds has a wonderful atmosphere.
A very disabled friendly village.

"The River Windrush"

Without the River Windrush the village would be nothing and the photo shows the river out in the country just outside the village.
There is a walk along the river that can me made - the entrance is through a gate off Sherbourne Street and the walk is marked with a brown sign.

"The river in the village"

The river flows through the village and is crossed by bridges that take cars and people across it at regular intervals. The banks on the north side are grassed and suitable for picnics and the bank on the other side is a pedestrains only walk way and it is here you will find gift shops and tea shops galore.

"Local shops and local people"

The village has resisted having national chain stores and the tea shops, gift shops and local stores are owned and operated by local people.
There is a small Somerfield food store but all other shops are locally owned.
