Cotswolds

by kfunk

Hello! I will be visiting England in August and was wondering which city to stay in for a couple of nights: Castle Combe or Bourton-on-the-water. They both look small and lovely! Which would be best?

I've only been to Bourton but it was just as lovely as I'd imagined.

If you only have a few days to spend in England, then visit Truro in Cornwall. You will not be disappointed!

In Cornwall you will be able to visit the City of Truro (with the Cathedral), the coast lines, the moors, visit the Eden Project (which recieved visitors from across the globe). See St Ives with it's art galleries and beaches - and fabulous restaurants. Visit Kynance Cove with it's breathtaking scenery and then pop along to the Minnack Theatre (the only amphitheatre in Cornwall) which overlooks the sea.

See the Lost Gardens of Heligan and wander through the 'Jungle' .

You will want to come back - time and time again

well i don`t know about Castle Combe but i know Bourton-on-the-water is a really great place to stay with fantastic countryside in the surrounding areas.i have been there many times as it is just up the road from me.

Castle Combe is quaint and rural. I don't think I would select it as a base but it would be fine for a 1/2 day lunch stop, photo opt, and walk around.

I have yet to visit Bourton-on-the-water. I am planning on making a day trip there in July by bus from Moreton-in-Marsh. My husband and I have decided to use Moreton-in-Marsh as a base for a week because we can get there by train easily after arriving at Heathrow (via Paddington) and because it is a short train ride back to Oxford where we have a couple of evening obligations. Also there are a number of buses out of Moreton-in-Marsh going to Cotswold villages.

Bourton is lovely, but very touristy. It gets swamped in the day time with day trippers on coaches but then gets quiet and peaceful in the evening. For a truly lovely, idyllic Cotswold village, try Lower Slaughter. There is a charming hotel there called Washbourne Court, mid- to upper price but well worth a splurge. I hope this is not too late to be helpful. Happy travels!
