The Cathedral
by jayhawk2000
Gloucester Cathedral is famed for its delicate stone carving and fan vaulting. Its well-preserved cloisters were featured in the movie version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Perhaps the cathedral's greatest historical feature is the tomb to King Edward II, the tragic monarch whose story has been told by cult film director Derek Jarman.
The cathedral hosts regular concerts and there is an evensong service most every evening. For more info ring 0145 252 8095 or click on over to www.gloucestercathedral.uk.com
If you're in the area another great bit of ecclesiastical architecture worth seeing is Tewkesbury Abbey (see my Tewkesbury page).
Historic Docks
by M0B1US
Originally created by Queen Elizabeth I, these docks made Gloucester rich from grain exports via the Bristol and Sharpness canal into the Bristol Channel to avoid the tidal nature of the River Severn.
They were allowed to decline into dereliction until the 1980's when they began to be regenerated into the present day attraction that is the Historic docks with loads of things to keep everyone amused.
Nowadays it is used as a marina for locally owned pleasure craft with the opportunity to take trips on the canal.
Other attractions here include the Gloucester Regiments Museum, the Antiques Centre and the National Waterways Museum. Also here are some cafes and bars as well as a small shopping area.

"Cathedral city"
I have now lived here for about 2 and a half years. I don't really have many places to compair it with in terms of living (living for 10 years in rural Devon) but for a city, it's ok.
The area around the Cathedral is easily the best in terms of architecture and peacefulness.
I have some pictures around somewhere and when I dig them out, I will put em on here.
"Docks"
The docks are also a good place to visit, although I wouldn't recommend swimming in them!
The old warehouses are now mostly posh flats but look like they did 100 or more years ago which is quite good I think. Watch out for swing bridges and things though, they catch me out frequently!
You can always find barges and smaller boats here, but you often find larger cruisers, Navy and even sailing ships. There is are two dry docks here for repairing them which all helps :o)
