Travel Tips for Gloucester

James Bond, I presume...

by M0B1US

So this is what happened to Roger Moore after he hung up his 007 gear!?

Found this down Three Cocks Lane (Whoa, this tip is getting more and more weird as I write it!) just off Westgate Street as I was looking for a better angle of the cathedral...

Funny what you find off the beaten path! My favourite bit was the halo - before Roger Moore was famous with James Bond, he played Simon Templar in The Saint.

The National Waterways Museum

by Balam

The National Waterways Museum Gloucester is housed in a Grade II listed warehouse in the heart of Gloucester’s historic docks beside the Gloucester and Sharpness Ship Canal and the River Severn . The Museum tells the story of the regions canals and rivers and its collections include objects designated of national importance.

There are numerous displays which include
'Living havens for wildlife' which celebrates how the countyrs canal system has become a haven for all kinds of Wildlife.

'Move it!' which looks at the horses, engines, boats, locks ect used on the canals and is packed with intricate models, hands-on displays and real working engines

among many others.

The docks were once a very important gateway between the world of tall ships and international trade and Britain's network of inland waterways with sailing vessels and tall ships coming from all over the world to unload their cargo. Many tall ships still visit the docks today.

On the quayside of the museum you can see many historic craft, including steam dredger SND No 4, tug Severn Progress and barge Sabrina there are also narrow boats moored near by.

St Mary De Crypt Church

by Myfanwe

A Church was recorded on this site as early as 1140. Little survives of the original Norman Church apart from some archesin a blocked up portion of the crypt. The Crypt has had some unusual uses int the past. In the medieval period the crypt may have been used as a charnel house containing bones of the dead but by 1576 it was occupied by living parishioners as it had been converted into a tavern. The tavern remained for nearly a hundred years! Following on from the siege of Gloucester in 1643, the Church was turned into an explosives manufactory and ammunitions store for the defending garrison.

Gloucester

by jayhawk2000

Gloucester has ancient Roman foundations, an elegant Norman cathedral and enormous Victorian docks which all deserve a few hours diversion if you're passing through.

I visited on my way to seeing the total eclipse in Devon in 1999 because I would like to eventually see all of Britain's cathedrals. The cathedral is nice but the town itself is no great shakes.
