Renaissance London Chancery Court Hotel: Business Class Hotel in Downtown london

by bcorbitt

Stayed for one night at end of four day trip as spent previous two at friends house in suburb(Hither Green) and wanted to spend late night out on town and also go to British Museum before afternoon flight. The British Museum is within walking distance and High Holburn is lined with bars including some nightclubs that are open past midnight which is nice. This is a definitely a business hotel as only could afford it with frequent flyer points. It is very nice as the bar is quiet and open late without too outrageous drink prices. Being a business hotel they charge for internet which I never understood since cheaper hotels provide it for free. Breakfast was included in overnight certificate and definitely would not have paid what I think was the 20 pound charge as the eggs were runny and other that fancy eating area the food was buffet no different than a 3 star hotel. Bellhop waved cab(lourie) into the courtyard as the hotel. Room was very nice though being only five stories tall even our top floor room did not have much of a view. Bed was comfortable and bathroom large. Weird thing about hotel was lack of plugs as had trouble plugging in hair dryer easily. If on business account and working in financial area would stay, if on budget would go elsewhere.

Old feel of building as though part of Marriott chain it was converted from former court building. Kept most of old charm including the old library feel of bar area.

Best Western Burns: 3 star hotel in residential area

by bcorbitt

Stayed at this hotel as it was one of the hotels that was part of the free for two night stay that went with my British Airways ticket. Hotel was perfectly acceptable as it was within a few blocks of the Earl's Court station and had all the amenties one needs when traveling. Free Wi-fi, comfortable bed and place to put clothes. Bathroom though small was big enough for tub. Window in bathroom could be changed as very drafty which caused tub to be cold until ran hot water for a few minutes. Breakfast that came with room was filling as eggs were well made and sausage and bacon filling. Also get the usual assortment of deli meat and cereals if only getting continental instead of full English. If does not come with room and not overly hungry best to just head elsewhere as not worth either the 10 pounds for full or 6 for continental. Do not expect an amazing view as our room stared out an office looking building. Some rooms most have views of small park. That park is private and the surrounding area is very residential which is nice as the main drag outside of the subway station is filled with reasonable priced places to eat plus drug stores and grocery stores and ATMs for most of the major banks.

Free Wi-Fi was nice and though did not use think they had a late night bar snacks menu which is good as many London food establishments close at midnight even the pubs that will do a last call around 11:30. As mentioned got room as part of airplane ticket and if do the same British Airway deal I highly recommend. Think the base price for our room was 120 pounds(192 dollars at 1.6 dollars to a pound) though saw prices for cheaper on the net.

Park Plaza Westminster bridge: Business Hotel with views of Big Ben

by bcorbitt

This is a four star hotel with some two star qualities that we got at two star price. The hotel is huge as it basically two hotels wrapped in glass circle that creates a huge atrium. That means many of the rooms have no direct sunlight views instead they windows get views onto the atrium. We had a window view which looked out at the Park Plaza hotel that was next door. We actually had booked an atrium room but got this one that was handicapped accessible. The problem was it that at six foot four the low lying sink. No place to hand ones towel and lack of chairs in the room made it a problem to use the bathroom or plane the day. The room was huge as had a king sized bed and enough space for a sitting chair. The closet was decent size but there was only two small side table sized drawers and only a about 8 hangers which is surprising for a business hotel. We finally were moved on our last day to another room which was a suite with an amazing view of big ben. The suite was very nice as though the bedroom area was smaller(only big enough for a queen) there was a separate couch area with its own tv which is very helpful if the two people have different sleep schedules like us(I wake up early and my girlfriend likes to watch tv for awhile. Overall if you can get a good price this(we paid just over 200 dollars on Otel.com this is a good place as within walking distance of the London eye, Big Ben and convient to both Waterloo and Westminster Underground. For those wanting late night activities the area is dead other than the hotel.

As mentioned above the area is dead as most places outside out nightclubs close up at 11pm , midnight at the latest. The hotel has a happening and pricey lounge/bar area in the lobby that was still packed at midnight with a mix of hotel guests, tourist and locals with money. This being a four star hotel their is a late night room service which is godsend as used it 2 of the three nights due to needing some late night refreshments. Expect to pay for the service as my hamburger with fries was 18 pounds(around 30 dollars) plus they tack on 12.5% service charge. The food was decent and not much competition as even in Piccadilly most of the restaurants stop serving at Midnight. Did not use the spa/gym but did go down and there was a nice small workout room(bigger than your average hotel as they had a few cardio machines and enough weight machines to work out every muscle group. The pool was small but serviceable to do laps. The spa services did not seem outrageously priced either.

Lime Tree Inn: You get what you pay for

by Irm_E

My goodness! Tried one of Rick Steve's locales for B&B in London...sent the deposit and all...when my sis and I showed up to this little hole in wall it was terrible! Gave the $80 deposit and the lady showed us to our room which was in an aclove or attic. And there were dirty shoes lined up down the corridor. Our suitcases were thrown in a basement. My sister and I just stared at each other and when the owners went to the kitchen, I went downstairs and grabbed our gear, and told my sister to make her way out of the door and onto the street..the lady started yelling for someone for backup and they started chasing us down the street. We hid around a corner and kept walking until we got to a hotel in Knightsbridge...sorta like a Quinta Inn. Nothing too extravagant but really a nicer place than most you find in US. It was great there and the staff was excellent. This happened a while back, so I forgot exactly what the hole in the wall place was..I think something like Lime St B&B to that effect. Anywho, please be aware of some of the reviews in Rick Steve's books. I would not recommend this place at all!

The Ascot Hotel: Ascot located across from Paddington station

by candell

When booking on line it is extremely hard to get a feel for a hotel. I was looking for one that would house a family of four in 1 room on a budget. Easy to do in the US, not so much in London. I did finally find a hotel that would accomodate us for about $95. This was in 2005 during New Years. The location was great across the street from Paddington Station. The room was on the fifth floor and the lift was broken. We noticed that on each floor they had the same print of a guy on a horse in the country. Sometimes a floor would have 2 or 3 of the same print in the hallway. Anyway we finally got up to our room, went to put something in the refrigerator, none there. Just an empty hole. the fixtures on the tub had tape holding them together. However the beds were pretty comfortable. During the night the room became uncomfortably hot, so we opened the windows. We also just put our drinks outside on the ledge as we had no fridge. No problem. All in all it was a pretty good stay. If everything goes smoothly there is not much to remember but when you have little mishaps it is fun to laugh about. And now the name ASCOT always gets a laugh in our family.

The same pictures on the walls of every floor.

Dolphin House: Your home away

by acoco

My wife and I stayed for 8 nights, from June 6 to 14, 2009, and it was a superb experience. Service was very good and friendly. The location was very convinient with bus lines and a tube station very near. At a reasonable walking distance we could find some of the hot place as such King´s Road and Sloane Square. The Tate Britain Museum is also very close. in the neighbourhood are several very interesting restaurants and shops. Since we have a son living in London, we are planning to return at least twice a year and Dolphin House will be our first option. We definitively recomend Dolphin House for those who wants to experience a home living during a voyage.

Dolphin House is a serviced apartment concept of lodging, where you can find the privacy and confort of home with hotel housekiping services for daily cleaning and doing beds. Residents at Dolphin House have access to an exceptional range of onsite facilities, including the Club Lounge and Champagne Bar, a beautifully designed contemporary indoor pool, riverside tennis court, gymnasium and squash courts. And if you have an appetite you can enjoy the offerings of Dolphin Bar & Grill – delicious, organic food served throughout the day and evening.

Express by Holiday Inn: if you want convenience

by uglyscot

I have not stayed here, but was curious as to why such a hotel had been built in such a poor district. Looking on the Internet I found it was advertised as being within easy access of the city, Canary Wharf and City Airport. It is within a few minutes walking distance of Canning Town Underground Station and Docklands Light Railway. It is also close to ExCel Exhibition centre. It is also close to the bars and restaurants of the Docklands

The web site says "Express by Holiday Inn Docklands
The 136 bedroom hotel is a stylish and modern hotel offering guests a comfortable warm and friendly stay. If you require an accessible room please request this when making your reservation. The hotel is fully air conditioned and all bedrooms and public areas have WIFI access. Children and teenagers under age 18 can stay free with parents in their room."
It is a 4 star hotel with all the expected facilities available.

Check in 2pm, checkout 11am

It is ideally situated for both business and leisure travellers visiting London. The hotel is opposite Canning Town Underground Station ,Docklands Light Railway and Bus Station. The underground station gives access to the Jubilee Line giving direct routes to the centre of London within 15 minutes. Canary Wharf and Docklands within 5 minutes. The hotel is ideally located for the new Excel Exhibition Centre and London City Airport 5 minutes from the hotel.

Novotel London Excel: Good value for money

by glennkasner

When at first I learned that the hotel was in fact situated out in the Docklands area I was concerned about having to travel miles to get into the city each day. This however presented no problem for us as the DLR and Tube made gettin to and from the hotel a breeze.
From the time we checked in until we left, we were well cared for by every single member of the staff we had contact with.
The hotel itself seems to be relatively new and modern and caters well for young and old.
I can hightly recomend this hotel to anyone wanting quality accommodation at really affordable rates. We were 3 sharing a room double bed and sleeper couch and it cost us ZAR 8000 +- USD800 for 5 nights

Modern , airy and the staff were super friendly. The hotel has all one can want (gym, good restaurant, wi fi, internet etc.
Just a short,( mainly undercover) walk from the DLR station, a short way away from the O² centre.
