 | | | | Thistle Charing Cross: Thistle Charing Cross Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
We had been invited to a wedding in central London and decided to make a night of it and stay in a hotel for the night. That said, we didn't want to spend too much money on a swanky hotel, so settled for the Thistle Charing Cross as it was reasonably priced (by London standards) and in a convenient location for us. The hotel is located right by Charing Cross train station, so is incredibly convenient to the West End and its attractions. It has 239 rooms, and it was a bit of a walk to get to ours….which turned out to be right next to the elevator - not always the best place to be due to noise. We had booked via a "cheap" deal, so I guess you don't always get the best room in those circumstances. As it turned out we didn't have any problems with noise thankfully.
The room was a decent size for a London hotel, and decorated tastefully (well, if you are in to flowery padded headboards that is). All the staff we came into contact with were friendly. We decided not to pay the extra charge for breakfast the next morning, and headed off for a big breakfast elsewhere. The hotel suited our needs perfectly and it was a fine place to stay. Not sure we would bother again, as at £130 it wasn't really a cheap night, but it is certainly well located for tourists looking for a central 4 star hotel. | | | | The Montague on the Gardens: Intimate luxury boutique hotel | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Having never stayed in London prior to this trip, I wanted a place that would be secure and safe to walk at night. I wanted a quieter area of London but close enough to the attractions I wanted to see. I chose this hotel because it caters to the female traveler who travels alone by providing extra locks as well as female maids and room service servers. This hotel is a "gem" and I will stay here again when I return to London in the future. The Montague on the Garden is an intimate boutique hotel rated Four-Star Deluxe by the RAC and AA. Five Crown Silver Award from the English Tourist Board. It Overlooks a secluded garden square including a private conservatory. Guests can walk to Covent Garden, the West End theatres as well the British Museum which is located across the street from the hotel. I had a superior double room which looked out over a lovely garden. The bed was very comfortable, the temperature gauge kept the room at a constant temperature, the towels in the bathroom were thick, and thirsty. Many amenities included an in room safe, web tv (this was a bit difficult to see as the resolution was poor and it was a bit pricey at 7.00 bps for one hour of use), mineral water, a blow dryer, an iron and a trouser press, and very nice bathrobes to use during your stay. Excellent room service as well.
There is a sitting room on the ground floor where one may entertain guests which I did on 3 separate occasions. There were no glares or stares from the staff as a matter of fact, Mustapha the concierge, stepped forward to snap a picture or two for us. It was just like entertaining in my home. The staff is most competent and polite, they go out of the way to assist in making your stay a memorable one. Another unique item that this hotel provided for the room which I have never seen before, was a full compliment of business implements such as scotch tape, a stapler, a pair of scissors, paper clips as well as plain envelopes, pens and pencils. This came in so handy when I had to wrap a gift or two! The Montague has a very lovely high tea for a reasonable price, which rivals many upscale places that offer a high tea in London, they also have the Blue Door Bistro restaurant where you can have dinner at the Chef's table in the kitchen! Now how cool is that? | | | | St Giles Hotel: Probably the worst hotel I have ever seen Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Some people seem to have enjoyed this Hotel, how I don't know. I'll start with the good part: Location was very good, right nest to Tottenham Court Road with the subway station a few meters from the Hotel. That's it. Now the bad things: I arrived quite late (about 21.30) and asked at the reception where I could have something to eat. They told me to go to the restaurant bar that they would be able to prepare something for me. When I got there the person asked me who had told me that (that they would be able to prepare something for me) and told me to go with him. He took me back to the reception and yelled at his colleague "You know you can't tell customers they can eat at this time" and told me "Sorry Sir, I cannot prepare anything for you". That was one of the most surreal experiences I ever had in a Hotel. The room was the smallest I have ever seen. I had to open my suitcase on the bed as there was not enough space on the floor. Sitting on the toiled, I had to open the bathroom door as my knees would hit the door. The next morning, I wanted to take a shower but there was not hot water. I asked for a new room, which I got. It was just as small. The morning after, once again there was no hot water and neither in the morning after... apparently now the boiler was to blame. 2 days hot water in 5, is not exactly good. Another thing was the wake-up call. In 5 days that I stayed, I once got the call at the right time, once half an our late, once I got a guy rushing into my room without knocking about 40 minutes late and twice I did not get it at all. Every day I would complain, get an apology and the promise it would work the next day. Not only this but it was also the most expensive non-luxury Hotel I have ever stayed in. I was travelling for business. I will NEVER EVER stay at this hotel again. | | | | YHA Hostel London: Reliable Budget Accommodation Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I am tired of paying for hotels and being kept awake by traffic - so I now use hostels. - the city ones will still be noisy - but check out below - these places are quiet and a fraction of the price!!! What are hostels? Read this Hostel Information I wrote to explain, since hostels in the UK are a bit special. See YHA Hostels and check out City Hostel at St Pauls - great location and quiet!!! Amazing value.
If a really quiet night is needed and rest from city life - check out the small country hostels on the Outskirts of London, like Epping Forest or Tanners Hatch - very quiet, with bird song, trees, and good company. Only 2 miles from a tube station. With two days in London soon, flying in / out Gatwick Airport, rather than pay mega bucks or stay in noisy places we are staying in the quiet country setting of Holmbury St. Mary in Surrey. This delightful Youth Hostel costs 11 pounds per person, a night and my wife and I get a private room. WOW - a hostel to the south of London, between Gatwick Airport and the city centre, in the Surrey countryside. We can travel into the city on day passes and explore the sites - then come "home" to peace and quiet, cook our own supper (I am a chef) and in the morning it is easy to reach the Airport again by a bus and express train. If you like peace and quiet but want to be able to explore London, check out these cheapand quiet hostels - money cannot buy this sort of idylic charm!!! www.yha.org.uk/hostel/hostelpages/89.html *TO SEE THE HYPERLINKS IN THE TEXT YOU MAY HAVE TO GO TO THE TIP ON MY LONDON PAGE* Leave a Comment Theme: HostelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: 36 Carter Lane, , London, England WC1E 6HJWebsite: www.yha.org.uk Other Contact: www.multimap.co.uk

 | | | | St Christopher's Inn, Shepherd's Bush: A Bunk in the Bush | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
For £20 a night you can get a bunk in a 4 bed dorm in this friendly, and well run chain hostel in Shepherd's Bush. There are other St Christopher's in the UK in Brighton, Edinburgh, Camden, and Greenwich and also in Europe in Amsterdam, Brugge, etc. They are quite well known as safe havens for backpackers on a budget. Check the link for more locations. Downstairs in St C's is the busy and lively Belushi Bar. (All the hostels have a bar attached). When you arrive you have to check in at the bar and you will be given a magnetic key card and enter the hostel via the internal door. Getting the attention of the receptionist might be difficult in the busy bar as she/he is also the barman. After midnight you take the side entrance. The hostel is a bit of a rabbit warren and locating your room can be a challenge - but there's always someone around to ask if you get lost! There are no lockers so don' t leave anything valuable in your room. Most people are fairly aware of hostel etiquette and it doesn't take too much thought to realise that it's pretty inconsiderate to come into your room at 4am and switch on the lights and start taking a shower - which is what our roomy did - and then say "Oh dear! Did I wake you???" "Well YES actually!!" The room was warm - in fact it was too stuffy at 4.30am!! (our roomy put the heater on for when she came out of the shower - but when we got up at 8am it was freezing and didn't seem to be working at all!) Our dorm was *ensuite* but remember to bring your own towels as they are not provided. Breakfast is available downstairs in the bar from 8am - 9.30am and consists of cereal, toast (only white bread), jams, tea and coffee. I'm not sure how long it takes to set up this simple menu but we arrived at 8.30 and they had only just put the hot water urn on so we had to wait for our hot drinks.
Lots of Austalian and Americans and Irish staying here. It's right near Shepherd's Bush Empire so you don't need to worry about catching the last train/tube home after you've been to a gig. There's a really good atmosphere at this hostel and it feels very safe and secure.
