As our trip to London was very improvised, it was kind of difficult to find a hotel there, I thought there was a convention or something like that, finally we got a room at the Wedgewood Hotel, it is a nice, clean and relatively cheap hotel with a good service. Also, i liked very much the location of the hotel.
-It has elevator, very small, but elevator anyway. -Breakfast is included, it is not a huge breakfast, but is it served with love ;) -Staff is kind and they let us to make a late check-out, thank you for that! I read and read and read all the online reviews and basicly nothing in London had a very nice rating least of all in my price rage (less then $120 USD per night, peanuts!) So I must iterate that when staying in London A) rooms will be smaller then Americana B) Bathrooms and toilets are 2 different things, may not be in your room unless specified, and will again be SMALLER C) the climate here is usually cold and although they do have an occasional heat wave it doesn't last long enough to warrant the expense of AC systems. Get Over IT! The sooner one lets go of such Hotel criteria and expectations for London, the better off one will be. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by the Westminster Hotel and so were several friends who picked me up there (based on thier knowledge of hotels in this area being Hostel-esque.) I did get the "Grove Room" which is thier recently renovated rooms & a few pounds more. I highly recommend the upgrade. I was quite happy with the plain white linens (yeah!) and simple beige decor! I don't think I could have handled the londonesque seemingly addiction to flower wallpaper and likewise printed bedding for 5 days. The room was small by American standards, but larger for London standards. There was an "ensuite" bathroom/wc and yes it was small, but we are letting that go remember? I had a "single" but that had a double bed (yeah!) There was an internet cafe in the lobby, an expresso bar, a regular bar and breakfast was included. The lobby and room furnishings were contempory, new and well done. The staff was hit and miss. I had a good experience but a fellow traveler did not.... guess it depends on who you get... remember this is London where a "thank you very much" can actually sound contemptuous... I stack it up there with regional seasonal effective disorder....
Watch out the taxi service availbale from the hotel is a car service and they attempted to charge me 15 pounds for a ride that cost only 6 pounds to get there via a taxi... best to get a taxi on your own. Breakfast was included and it was the standard European Continental speread inclusive of hard boiled eggs, cold cuts/cheese, breads, cereal, yogurt, coffee and juice. I would stay here again and recommend it to friends! I booked this hotel over the phone. I sent them an email using their website, since they didn't have online booking, asking them to reply ASAP since I was leaving for a trip soon. After two days, they hadn't replied so I just called them and booked a room. I liked that their price for a double room was just 74 pounds a night, and that they were near Hyde Park. After I had booked the room, I actually received a response to my original email about 3 or 4 days later, which I found pretty odd. When I checked in, I was very impressed. The lobby was beautiful. Lots of marble, a statue and fountain, very luxurious. I thought that maybe I'd found a steal for my 74 pounds a night. They told me that they'd upgraded me to a triple room, no extra charge, so I was very impressed with the hotel. Then I saw my room. It was small for a double room, let alone a triple. The walls had cracks in them, the floors were dirty, and most of the floor was actually on a slight incline. The beds and bathroom were okay, but the TV was tiny and had no remote control. They offer a free continental breakfast, which is really just juice, a piece of cheese, a piece of ham, and some cold toast. Or you can upgrade to a full English breakfast (continental plus a sausage, a piece of bacon, an egg and some beans) for 3 pounds. That's what I did. It was okay, but one day they managed to screw up my order, which kind of baffled me. This hotel is okay as a place to sleep, but not much else. It's kind of a dump, but I guess for that price in London, you can't expect much. I just think their website is a little misleading, as the rooms aren't nearly as nice as advertised. I couldn't get anything on Priceline in any region of London for my 1st night and I was up to $150 US so I gave up and booked a budget hotel near Paddington Station. There are dozens of these types of hotels along Sussex Gardens Road and I imagine they are all pretty similar. I booked a single room on booking.com for L56, the walk in price was just a little bit more than that I think. It's only about a block from Paddington Station so it's a very convenient area to stay in. From my hotel I was able to walk to the Edgware Road area (about 10 minutes) and to Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens. Since it's near a major train station, there are a lot of cheap places to eat nearby. I ate at Lolita and Flames, both takeaway kebab shops. Here's a link to some other places to eat in the area.
The hotel met my expectations for what I was paying for it, L56 is pretty cheap for an ensuite room in London without using a discounter like Priceline. Bathroom-very small, no toiletries except soap. Low water pressure but plenty of hot water. There was a hair dryer. Room-single room was was basic but clean, bed was reasonably comfortable, decent sized for a single, coffee maker and wall mounted TV. Quaint hotel. Make sure your room overlooks the courtyard, not the street. You need to sleep with the window open on warm nights. It's too noisy on the street side to get any sleep with the windows open.
Neat little bar in the front sitting area of the hotel. Building dates back to the 14th century, but the facilities are modern and quaint at the same time. Run by a great company, lovely staff, reasonable rates and a wonderful restaurant and bar.
The building is historic, it's centrally located in Braintree, Essex, and is a great place to base out of when seeing the countryside. LOVE the staff!
