 | | | | Worcester House Hotel: Stay in a real British neighbourhood | Satisfaction: | | | | |
This charming hotel is in Wimbledon, the perfect place to stay away from crowded and definitely overpriced London city center. Getting a day travelcard you can use every transport way in London, and as Wimbledon Station is 3 minutes from the hotel you can access easyly to railway and tube. Waterloo, Victoria and Clapham Junction and 5 minutes from Wimbledon and we didn't have to wait more than 3 minutes for the train at the station. It's a small hotel but the double rooms we get were very big and bright, on the top floor. It was perfectly clean. Breakfast is included and could be continental or british (cooked), or both, delicious anyway. Visit the website as it's very complete. I also emailed them in advance as our flight arrived late in the evening so this way they could be aware of our arrival.
It's a family running hotel, and David and Janet have what you need to feel like at home. It's a charming typical house in a beautiful and secure area of Wimbledon, close to the main station. Every breakfast was a good talk with them planning the day and asking about everything we need. And they offered advise with a smile. I prefer to stay in a typical british house when I'm in London than in a big hotel company where every hotel is twin to other in your town. | | | | YHA Hostel London: cheap lodging in london? yes! Compare Rates NEW! | Satisfaction: | | | | |
bare bones hostel, but how much time are you going to spend inside the room when london awaits, right? we shared the room with 2 other women who where always asleep when we got to the room and we were mortified to wake them up but watcha gonna do? the price was 49.20 pounds for 2 nights, the room has 4 beds one mirror and one washbasin. bathrooms at the end of the hall were nice and clean, we never had to wait in line.
on the inside, it looks like a maze. apparently the hostel has been expanding over the years by incorporating nearby buildings and now you need a map to get from the lobby to your room, to the cafeteria, to the bathrooms. there's free breakfast every morning (or so i was told, i slept through it); necessities (like towels and soap) are sold at the front desk. it's a 5 minute walk to st. paul's cathedral and the nearest tube station. if the short, fat guy behind the front desk who works the nightshift volunteers advice do not listen to him, he'll screw you big. | | | | YHA Hostel London: St Pauls YHA: sorry we bothered Compare Rates NEW! | Satisfaction: | | | | |
Usually we take advantage of the luxuries on offer at the St Pancras YHA, but for a change we decided to stay in a more central and historic location. We thought where better than St Pauls YHA, across the street from the cathedral in what used to be a choir boys school. I'm sorry we bothered, as it was one of our worst hostelling experiences. Private rooms are available but we opted for one of the marginally cheaper dormitories. Never again. Despite being in a small dorm with only six beds, we were situated almost at street level. Windows were wide open as there's no venitilation, allowing in all manner of street noise. This includes shouting and screeching from pubs up the road, followed by your bunkmates crawling in much later from those pubs up the road. There's a brief spell of relative quiet after 2am, punctuated by the extravagant snoring and the occasional bout of wind from your bunkmates. Come 6am the construction work, street sweeping, bin emptying and traffic commuting begins in earnest, all tolled off by persistent church bells. You'll crawl from your bunk at dawn quivering like someone from an Edgar Allan Poe tale: 'The bells...the bells...the BELLS!!!'.
Free bed linen, showers and breakfast are included in the price, but this is Continental style and not a cooked full English. The dining area only seats about 30 people (for a hostel that sleeps 190). The building in general is a bit rickety and has no wheelchair access. As well as the cramped restaurant there is a lounge, internet PCs and laundry. I don't think there's a kitchen. You must be a member of the International Youth Hostelling Association or the guest of a YHA member with a special pass. We paid £50 for a night with no sleep and a rubbish breakfast. It's definitely worth paying the extra £15 or so to have a private en-suite with full English breakfast on offer at St Pancras YHA. The nearest tube stops are St Pauls on the Central Line and Blackfrairs on the District Line. Trains come into Blackfrairs station as well, plus the City Thameslink station is within walking distance. | | | | YHA St Pancras Hostel London: A superb hostel Compare Rates NEW! | Satisfaction: | | | | |
This is one of London's most modern and well-appointed hostels, being a converted office block with restaurant, lounge, internet PCs, kitchen, laundry, 24-hour secure access plus cycle & bag storage. You must be a member of the International Youth Hostelling Association. Free bed linen, hot private showers and a full cooked breakfast are included in the price! Most rooms are small with just a few bunk beds which can be privately reserved if you're travelling in a small party. Or you can upgrade to a premium room with double bed, TV and en-suite for about GBP63 per room per night. That's right, B&B for 32 quid per person per night in central London...excellent value! No surprise then that The Independent named it one of their Five Best Budget Hotels in London.
Being steps away from three mainline stations means it's the best option for travellers coming from the north of the UK. If you've flown into Gatwick or Luton airports, catch the Thameslink train service to King's Cross. The hostel is also near a stop on the Heathrow A2 Airbus. It's worth checking with the hostel first if you're unsure about travelling there as there is local disruption whilst a new train station is being built in the neighbourhood. The main local attraction is the British Library directly across the street. The Foundling Museum at Coram Fields is only a 5 minute walk and you can walk to the British Museum in 15 minutes. If your feet are too beat, your transport options for getting around London easily are excellent.
