For the traveller looking to stay within steps of the West End Theatre district, near to the Courts or Covent Garden, and across the street from Tea at the Savoy, no location could be better! Accessible from the Embankment, Charing Cross and Covent Garden tube stations it offers quick connections to any point in the metropolitan area. Interior lower floor rooms are Spartan - yet clean and very quiet. Breakfast is served both Continental and English style, but get there before 9:00 AM, to avoid the crowds that will descend. The hotel is apparently a favorite on the group-tour circuit, so is fully booked nearly every night, even in the 'shoulder season' of late March.
The friendly staff at the Concierge desk are extremely attentive, unlike the breakfast room staff who seemed a bit 'overworked and underpaid', serving the morning hordes. A free morning paper at breakfast is a plus. Perfect location for hopping on/off the tube at Gloucester Rd. station: Rumpole's old stomping grounds! The rooms vary - we've stayed in several, on different floors, some smaller, some a bit grander. But all were very comfortable, quiet, with free daily paper, and that glorious Grand Staircase to descend on the way to the sunny/ bright breakfast room each morning. Friendly, international staff make you feel welcome.
Views face either across the road toward other buildings or over inner light-wells, but that's not the point with this hotel. Charm and location is what makes us loyal visitors. And for those who must: an excercise room is available at the Millenium Gloucester next door. Just across the street is the Stanhope Arms pub and a stop for The Big Bus Company tour buses. Room rates I indicated are for the ROOM, by the way - not per person and they start at approx. 100 pounds. Not bad, given the location in Kensington/Chelsea. Wow, what a posh place! I thought I'd gotten a killer online deal for two nights at the Reubens, but after all taxes had been applied and the girl at the hotel desk had sold me on a $30 extra room upgrade (for a better view), I ended up paying much more than I'd originally budgeted for. But what a bizarre, splendid place! The decor of the hotel was distinctly "British", all dark woods, deep red colours, and gold gilding. The lobby and restaurant areas had lots of royal memorabilia and old military flags on display. The bartender was just as you would expect at a fancy British place, a stiff-upper-lip guy in a tuxedo--he drawled out "Siiirrr?" whenever he took my order. The staff was greatly friendly and courteous--the girl at the check-in desk was quick and the concierge helped us plan a whole walking tour of the area. The location of the hotel is ideal for those wanting to see the changing of the guard in the morning or walk to the other sights (such as Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament). The window in our room looked out over one of the gates of Buckingham Palace towards the Royal Mews. I have to say, it was pretty impressive to look out your window and see the Palace less than a hundred feet away. Different types of royal seals adorned above and around the bed. The tiled bathroom was small but immaculately clean. I wouldn't take the over-the-top regal atmosphere here too seriously though. Underneath all the pomp, underneath the fancy dressings, I found the Rubens to be a very normal hotel--in need of some paint here and there, the room was kind of small, and the elevator didn't work one day. But it's a really fun place to stay for that same reason and I would definitely recommend it when visiting London; I think royal-watchers and kids would especially love the atmosphere.

If there is one thing I can't stand about five star hotels is obsequious service. Thankfully at this place it is courteous and swift, and no more. I just hate some waiter worrying about the exact placing of a fork - as if it really matters in life. This hotel has won numerous awards, partly for the service standards already mentioned and partly for the modern, minimalist design of the hotel. I especially like the lobby and bar area, which occupies an imposing triangular site in the heart of theatreland. The flat-iron, triangular shaped building was the former offices of a newspaper years ago, and is rumoured to be favoured by Madonna (the singer rather than the mother of Jesus), although she probably didn't have a standard room.
Several virtues to mention here : The beds had some of the most comfortable bed lined I have ever come across - I found it difficult to get up in the morning. The underground pool, whilst not very large is perfectly servicable, and a good place to chill out after a hard day's sightseeing. The Location was excellent - saves loads on taxi fares to theatres and restaurants. There are over 300 original works of art dotted around the hotel, including at least one in every guestroom. In conclusion, an excellent hotel, although I was glad it wasn't me who was paying the bill. Fairly good sized hotel on a street lined with hotels. We had a twin room which was small, but not so small you couldn't walk around. Very clean...clean bathroom. Reception was very friendly and we were able to check in at 7:30 in the morning as there was a room available. The walls are very thin, but didn't pose a problem for us. Two minute walk to Queensway tube, three minutes to Bayswater.
In room: Coffee and tea, hairdryer, cable TV, safe, refrigerator. Bar in lobby, continental breakfast included, English breakfast available for 6 GBP.
