The Strand Palace: location, location, location   Compare Rates NEW!

  • I have stayed here on two occasions, and it is a great deal for a single room, about average for a double. It is clean, with a helpful staff and could not be in a more convenient spot, directly across the street from The Savoy, at the Waterloo Bridge.

I was most surprised by the pleasant service in the pub in the hotel and also the Mask Bar in the lobby. After having drinks the night I arrived I discovered that the bartender had cashed out before I paid. When I pointed it out to him he said he assumed I was staying at the hotel and I could pay him anytime before I checked out. He didn't even ask for my room number. Having never been to London before, and traveling alone, I found it such a welcome, especially in a large hotel.

There are some stunning views to be had of the River Thames and Tower Bridge from this hotel. It is right next to Tower Bridge (approx 1-2 mins walk!). It is also not much further to the Tower of London. As you can see this is one ugly hotel from the outside. This is pretty plush, but is certainly not one of Londons finest hotels. Really you are paying for location and view. It's also pretty big, I believe it has around 800 rooms. There is air conditioning and a gym.

    The view!

Hyde Park Inn: You really don't need a picture of this place.   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:

  • My first time in London I was alone and wanted to save money. I booked myself at this place and though it couldn't be so bad--it was within walking distance of Kennsington Palace. Certainly a place so near to the late Princess Diana's home had to be classy. Walking down Inverness Street I was excited at all the white-washed hotels that occupy this street which have a "Faulty Towers" look to them. Checked into this place and went to my single room which was--one bed...ONLY one bed. Actually it was a bunk bed that I was able to use to put my suitcase on.

What can I say. Places like these at least inspire you to spend as little time possible at the hotel. The room's do not have bathrooms but I was lucky because mine was next door to a one. Being constantly woken up at night from the other guests going to the bathroom and hearing the pee hit the porceline of the toliette is something you just can't get The Ritz Darn!! Oh and the constant flushing, yes...fond memories.!

President Hotel - London: For a Hard day's night   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a big two star-hotel, that's (as far as you can get in London) in the budget category. I'm including it here as this hotel has it's own place in music legend - it was home for "The Beatles" during the summer of 1963. I'd passed by it countless times - but only recently found out about the fab 4 staying here some 40 years ago. I think room 114 was one of the rooms used - but perhaps you could update this tip with more information if anyone visits and does a bit more research?

You can also have a wander around Russell square and find the hexagonally shaped flowerbeds that the Beatles had a photo shoot with.

A lovely hotel, vast rooms and every amenity. It is big and has long corridors but that is because of the history of the building. It also has a restaurant which overlooks the Houses of Parliament and is a fine place to dine and to breakfast. I was so impressed by an overnight business trip here I took my wife back the next day for lunch. This is city centre at its best as it is central but you hear no noise nor see passing traffic. Staff are very helpful and used to seeing bemused guests wandering the wrong way in corridors!

The old County Hall - the building of the council of London before being abolished by Mrs Thatcher (and leading to the resurrection of the London Assembly in a new glass building which has a nickname amongst Londoners much to do with the spherical shape and the man who is our mayor). This is a special place. worth going to just for a drink in the bar overlooking the terrace and the Thames!

Comfort Inn Kensington London: Real Comfort in Summer   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A nicely restored typical London house outside, a modern hotel inside. Rooms are small, but this is normal in London, I have seen even smaller rooms in more expensive hotels here. The hotel is located in a lively area, but there is not too much traffic in this street.

Air conditioning in London is not easily found, even in hotels that are much more expensive than this one. And summer in London can be really hot. This hotel has also some modern things that are standard in other countries but not at all in the UK, such as satellite TV, playstation and internet in the rooms. However, I must warn readers that it is some years since I was there, so I do not know if things have changed with regard to service and hygiene.

The Montague On The Gardens: A cosy hotel in Bloomsbury   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Elegant, quiet and cosy, the Montague provides real comfort everywhere: in the lounge, the bar, the restaurant and especially in the rooms, that are not so cramped as those of many other London hotels. There are discounted last-minute rates if you book less than 21 days in advance.

The Montague has also rooms designed to meet the needs of business travellers, with internet, individual fax, even shopping service for those who wish to shop in London but have no time to spare for it. I have been there twice on work trips and I would definitely choose it again.

The Omega Hotel: Great place to stay!   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Omega Hotel is on the tree-lined street of Sussex Gardens, it's location is great (especially if you're using the Heathrow Express at nearby Paddington Station). I had a double room to myself which was very nice, the bathroom seemed fairly new (although water pressure from the shower could have been better). The only thing is, if I'd been sharing the room it may have felt a bit cramped - but you'd probably be too busy exploring the city around you anyway.

I was on the top floor, so had a good view of the street below me. The staff were very helpful and polite and The Omega Hotel makes an amazing breakfast. There is also a TV in every room.

Hyde Park Inn: Not extravagant, but comfortable.   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:

  • I believe this was a hostel. I don't think it was an inn or a hotel. If you are on a budget, this place would be for you. After all, you will probably be spending most of your time sight-seeing, so it is a great place to lay your head down at the end of the nite. They provide lockers in your room, so you can lock up whatever valuables that you have. Unisex rooms that room 2-12 people @ a very reasonable price. There is not much privacy, but great oppurtunity to meet fellow travellers like your self. The rooms are clean. I believe someone comes in every day or other to tidy up and make the beds. The bathroom, on the other hand, not as clean. It was like 50 people sharing the same bathroom. The staff is super friendly at the front desk are able to help you with directions, they'll call a taxi for you if you need, and provide other services. Internet access is available, but there are other places in the town, that offer a better rate.
