Which to choose
I'll be travelling a lone to London in early MArch

yha is always reliable and holland park is a very nice location, in a lovely park and central. may not be the cheapest

Holland Park is indeed, a very lovely location. It is dormitory accommodation, you share the room with many others. But it is cheap enough for such a central location close to Notting Hill.
YHA hostels tend to reflect their roots. They were once the for 'boy scouts' and 'girl guides' pursuing healthy trekking in the countryside. They could be a little austere and very communal. Most of them are in beautiful old buildings in the countryside. They are well run. Those in the London Parks may benefit from avoiding the traffic noise and the pollution. The culture might have modernised, but I doubt whether you can find many single rooms.
London also has hostels which are more along the lines of the Australian model where the emphasis seems to be on working and playing hard. Often oriented towards students on a 'gap' year.
I think they are all pretty safe. Very good for someone by themself, you will meet a lot of other travelers.
