Affordable, clean hostels in London?

by profuselycool

Hey there, a buddy and I are going to london on the 15th of June for 1 week. We're both 18 years old so obviously a youth hostel is preferable, hopefully somewhere we can meet other younger travelers and potentially a convenient location to the nightlife.

We are planning on staying in hostels but I'd rather not just show up and pick one at random the day we arrive. Does anyone have some advice on a particular hostel they stayed at or recommendations on finding good, clean, affordable hostel locations? Thanks for any help!

You might find this website helpful, there are reviews of the different hostels in London presumably by people who have stayed there as many are uncomplimentary. Be sure to check the location carefully, if you stay outside of zone 1-2 on the tube, it will take more time to get to the attractions and it will cost more to get around unless you travel by bus.

You should also look at www.hostelbookers.com and www.hostelworld.com for possibilities and reviews, even if not to book throught them (google the hotstel name and you'll find its website).

Discard reviews which rave and those which damn: consider the middle-of-the-road reviews only. Many people with ulterior motives post reviews on the internet.

YHA hostels are usually pretty good value and pleasant places to stay.

And the YHA on Gower Street is a convenient location. However, glad that you're not going to just turn up and hope for a room anywhere. Even in the quiet times, this would be risky and during June it would be foolhardy.

I agree with Leics about the YHA, I would probably start there and look at the reviews of them on the different websites that we've provided and see if you can find one that meets your needs. I've stayed in a few run by the YHA back when I was younger and didn't mind sharing a room and bathroom with a bunch of giggling French girls (alas, YOU won't be sharing with giggling French girls) and they were always clean and well run.

You can book those directly through the website that Leics gave you.

YHA is always good. hostelbookers and hostels.com have pretty comprehensive info on hostels in most cities. I stayed recently at the Smart Hostel on Russell Square. Smart have a few in London, and the one in Russell Sq was nice enough. nothing too special, but the beds are comfortable and private, and the facilities are good enough. Social atmosphere, plenty of travellers, big common room where people sit to talk and socialise. It's very near Euston Station (5 minute walk) and about 20yards from Russell Sq tube which is on the Picadilly Line which goes straight through the centre of London. Covent Garden nightlife is £5 away in a taxi, or two tube stops, and there are a few pubs in the vicinity of the hostel. There's also a tesco just roung the corner for food which is ace.

Travel Tips for London

b1bob dances in Covent Garden

by b1bob

Because we were so late arriving on this European whirlwind tour, we totally missed the tour of Amsterdam. Originally, the evening out on London was supposed to be a side trip with a fee. However, in a (feeble) effort to compensate us for missing Amsterdam, they included this into the trip. Aside from taking fish and chips along the Thames (together with malt vinegar served in old newspaper), a bunch of ladies from my group thought it would be fun to goof off and doo the Alley Cat dance in Covent Garden.

The Camden Market

by Elainehead

The Camden Market is on Camden High Street, close to the Electric Ballroom and the Camden Town underground station.

You will find mainly clothing.

The 'Millenium Eye' is just across the river from Parliament. This is a detail of the mechanism. I haven't ridden it, but I hear that the views are well worth it!

Stop and Search

by Conflictrealms

Like most places, London doesn't tolerate any drugs. In London, the Police are allowed to "Stop and search" you. If you are found with any hard drugs then you'll be taken to jail...If you are found with light drugs like Marijuana, then you'll have to pay an On The Spot Fine. This is at least £60, then they will take away your dope and let you go...... But you shouldnt take any drugs at all in the first place, right??? RIGHT???

All you need for your trip

First thing you have to pun on your luggage is an umbrella, english weather is very well know, most of time is raining so you need a good umbrella.
La primera cosa que tienes que poner en tu maleta es un paraguas, el tiempo en Inglaterra es conocido por estar la mayor parte del tiempo lloviendo así que el paraguas a la maleta. I went in May and weather was some days raining and some sunny so i put on my luggage winter clothe and summer clothe and confortable shoes there is lot to walk in London.
Fuí en Mayo y el tiempo fue algo loco, algunos días lloviendo y otros soleado así que puse en mi maleta tanto ropa de invierno como de verano y zapato cómodo porque en Londres hay mucho que andar Of course my digital camera with batteries and empty memory stick and ready to take lots of pic
Por su puesto la cámara digital con sus pilas y la tarjeta de memoria vacia para echar mogollón de fotos
