WHAT A BARGAIN !!!
Sourbugger found a fantastic bargain here in August 2010. August, when some hotels ramp up their rates. Through the 'ASDA travel' site we had a room (2 adults and children) with a full breakfast for...wait for it...TWENTY THREE pounds per night !
So what was the downside ?
Well, not the hotel for a start - it was a presentable three-star, clean and well run with a decent coffee shop and a pretty good brekkie.It's a Day's inn - what else did you expect ? The location is the problem - located on a motorway service station about 12 miles out of thge centre of london, it could harly be called scenic or convienient. The nearest public transport is a 10-15 minute walk away via a very dodgy looking underpass filled with scrapyards.
Unique Quality: Scratchwood services, the site of the hotel was built in the 1960's and was Trusthouse Forte's flagship. The period architecture has now all but disappeared. It has has alse been renamed (silly one this) as 'London Gateway'. This is stupid. it's not a gateway, it's a place for people do do drug deals, change coaches and address existential angst.
And just to let you rest more easily at night, the guns of HMS belfast in the Thames are aimed directly at you...and I'm not even making that up.
