Comfortable but only just worth four-stars

The De Vere Royal Bath claims to overlook Poole Bay in Bournemouth, this is partly correct, unfortunately part of the view is now obscured by a rather ugly cinema building and Chinese restaurant.
This is a comfortable and well-appointed hotel, friendly staff, twenty-four hour concierge and a very good breakfast with healthy and traditional options. It's probably one of the better hotels in the central Bournemouth area
Very disappointed

My husband and I chose this hotel for a weekend away to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. What a disapponting time we had. We booked a Deluxe Double room, only to find it had no double bed (twin beds pushed together with a visible gap between matresses!), smelled damp and was less than Deluxe! Wallpaper needed wiping due to tea bag splashes and general scuffs, there were cobwebs in the corners and the bathroom needed updating. We were transferred to another room, better, but still no double bed! In fact, it took 5 attempts for them to get us a double bed and even then it was only due to the hotel being half empty on the Sunday and they had to upgrade us to a suite! Is it too much to ask for husband and wife to share a double bed?!
The food in Oscars restaurant was nice, but no more special than our local Italian restaurant, yet far more pricey! The room service NEVER came with a smile, the room service food was average and often not as described, the breakfast brought to our room was 20 mins late (had to call and ask where it was!) and when it did arrive was substandard. All in all, I would not recommend this hotel as a good 4 star hotel. I would choose the Norfolk Royale instead next time we are heading to Bournemouth. Sorry, but good reviews are possibly written by those wearing rose tinted glasses or those with more money than sense! For the prices this hotel charges, we expect to see some luxury and refinement! Truly a disappointing 1st wedding anniversary break for us.
freezing cold hotel

For a four star hotel very poor, extremely cold in every public room, tatty bathroom and a bit grubby, only one small bottle shampoo and bath gel between two of us for two nights, radiator in bathroom disconnected on cold. nowhere to hang wet bathing suits even though they have a spa, swim pool water really cold, and restaurant very over priced
One of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in

We stayed here for one night over a bank holiday weekend - what a mistake.
- Upon arrival, it took over 30 minutes to drive into the entranceway, it was so clogged with unmoved cars.
- I have never seen such filthy carpets in a hotel in all my life. That applied both to the corridor and to our room.
- The décor in the room was in serious need of repair. The light switch on the left hand side of the bed was broken. The skirting board in the bathroom was peeling. The shower was next to useless since the head was so caked in limescale. One of the smaller floor tiles came away from the floor and stuck to my foot.
- Breakfast on the Monday morning was awful. The restaurant was packed (there was a queue outside) and the meal was served by five extremely overworked members of staff - trying to attend to the needs of a dining room the size of a footbal pitch.
- Upon leaving, I phoned down to reception to ask a couple of things and to ask for my car to be driven round (they have to park and fetch your car for you since there is no public car park). The latter message was never passed on to the Hall Porter with the result that I was kept standing around for 15 minutes whilst trying to get out of the place.
- Staff were perfunctory.
I wrote and complained to De Vere Hotels. I received a response which made no apologies for anything, but simply informed me that the carpets were regularly vacuumed! Never again. And I have to say that I have never stayed in a De Vere Hotel since.
What is the problem??

My husband and I are regular visitors to Bournemouth and have stayed in a variety of hotels there, and this visit we chose to stay at the Royal Bath.
Stupidly, I read the comments on this website after I had booked our stay 3 nights B&B in a double non-smoking room - now I was worried, but I need not have been.
On arrival we were treated with the utmost courtesy and effieciency and were upgraded in room. The room offered was a 'smoking' room so we asked to see another 'non-smoking' room. Once again we were upgraded and shown to a delightful, well appointed room with a veranda and a bay view. The wardrobe and dressing table may not have been IKEA but it was custom built and of a unique style to suit a hotel which is over 100 years old. As for filthy, threadbear carpets that was not our experience, yes the floors creaked but so do most other hotel floors in Bournemouth!
Yes, we arrived on a Monday and the hotel was not over populated but as seasoned hotel users we would be aware that Bank Holidays and most weekends (particularly now that the wedding season is upon us) will mean that you do have to wait to get your car parked or collected, you may have to wait to be seated in the restaurant, the leisure centre may have been full - but all these things really should be expected at high occupancy times of year.
In summary our experience was one of a peaceful, relaxing time. All the staff were attentive without being overbearing, they were courteous and polite at all times( and all spoke excellent English). The breakfast was plentiful, fresh, varied and where necessary, hot. The hotel has a genteel charm which both my husband and I appreciated (and I am only 44 - not an old fogey yet). Perhaps the bathroom was small but who cares - I did not intend to spend my entire holiday in it!
Question: Would we go back ? Answer: Definitely !
Old hotel

This hotel has probably had it's glorous days in the early 70-80's. But now the glory days are long gone and some refurbishment would have been nice.
Our room was very small and the bathroom had flaked off paint and drawers with broken handles didn't make the whole thing better.
The elevator didn't work during the first of the two days we stayed there so we had to carry our luggage two floors up to our room.
The restaurant where we had our breakfast were very big and felt impersonal, the food was good though.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Best Way to Get from Luton Airport to Stansted
by boocik04
Hello everyone,
I'll be arriving Luton Airport in the evening (about 1930)and I might be staying at the Stansted Great Dunmow Travelodge (I wonder if this is the nearest Travelodge to the Stansted airport?) as I have an early flight the very next day at 0730.
I was hoping if anyone knows the most convenient way (cheap and fast) to get from Luton Airport to Stansted.
All responses is appreciated and I thank everyone in advance :-)

Chek National Express web site www.nationalexpress.co.uk for bus 776 or 775 both go to Stansted, Luton, Heathrow & Gatwick.
Those buses fo to the South East major airports around the clock.

The Travelodge is 5 miles from the airport, o I imagine it is the closest. You will have to ensure that you have transport to the airport for an early start. They may have a shuttle but I somehow don't think so.

There is only one cheap direct way from Luton to stansted, and that is with the National Express bus transfer:
http://www.londontoolkit.com/travel/luton_stansted_transfer.htm
Journey takes around 90 minutes.
You can also take a less direct route, by going into Cambridge or London and out again (not really worthwhile).
http://www.nationalexpress.com/Airport/index.cfm
will give you accurate times and fare information. You should be able to get the 2035 coach, arriving at Stansted at 2155.
The Travelodge you mention is the nearest to Stansted, although there is obviously other accommodation nearer. You should pre-book a taxi or shuttle pick-up to get you to the airport (presumably for around 5.30?) when you arrive. The hotel will be able to advise, or you can google beforehand for local companies.
It would probably be faster to take a taxi, but would certainly not be a cheap option.
