Camper van to the Rockies

by WALU

We are a couple in our 70’s married for 50years, fit, but prefer Country Houses and Farmers Markets to 15 mile Fell walks.
For years we have driven to the South of France in June, camping/ caravanning for the month. (The Cannes Festival and Monaco Grand Prix are on then).
This year for a change, in June we are picking up a C19 camper van in Denver, dropping it off in Las Vegas 28 days later. (An ambition to see ‘cowboy land’)
We have studied Saga/Thomson etc trips, Jackson /Yellowstone Park /Salt Lake, Grand Canyon, etc. and have Lonely Planet Books etc to help us decide an itinerary.
If anyone has any advice about route, places to visit, clothes to wear, use of campsites etc. we would be grateful We have never been to America or driven a camper van.

Bring warm clothes. You can get snow in June in those areas. Check and see what reservations are possible for campers at the National Parks (Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Grand Canyon). (Use the NPS website)

For instance, when I look I find that in Yellowstone RVs are welcome at all campgrounds within Yellowstone (size restrictions may apply). The only campground within the park that offers RV services like electrical hook ups, water and sewer is the Fishing Bridge RV Park (no tents or tent-trailers allowed). Advance reservations can be made through Xanterra Parks & Resorts, the official lodging concessionaire within Yellowstone National Park. Call (307) 344-7311 to make a reservation

For a route I would suggest

Denver to Cheyanne Wyoming
Cheyanne over to the Badlands National Park in South Dakota
Badlands to Yellowstone NP.

From Yellowstone it is pretty easy to get down to Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons.

Then another reasonable day (7 hours drive) down to Salt Lake City.

From here to the Grand Canyon is more than I would want to do in one day so you need to pick out a stopping place someplace in the middle - maybe Canyonlands National Park.

And then it is another day's drive to Las Vegas.

Travel Tips for London

Weather and climate

by jacob_m

It rains in London, doesn't it?
Yes it rains in London, probably more than on average in Europe, but it does not always rain.
Sometimes it rains for a week and then it is sunny for a week.
Although most of the time it is just a little cloudy.

What about the temperature then?
In the winter the temperature never drops below 0 degrees, average temperature is probably around 5-8 degrees.
It snows maybe once or twice a year, but the snow melts away in a few hours.
It is never really that cold (OK it depends on what you compare it to), but it can be very windy which is the reason people often freeze.
The normal temperature in the summer is between 20 and 30 degrees. When it is really hot, taking the underground is unbearable as there is no air condition.
But the weather changes often and it is hard to predict, so bring both a sun cap and an umbrella and you'll be fine.

Go to Buckingham Palace for...

by mark02377

Go to Buckingham Palace for the changing of the Guard,
Walk across the London Bridge,
Check out the British Museum for some Egyptian, Greek, and other relics...
Get on the London Eye(never done it myself) but I hear its the best view of London. Walking around London, Its really hard to get lost with Underground Stations everywere.

Visit Rock Circus on...

by oja

Visit Rock Circus on Piccadilly. One look at Johnny Rotten and your ears are full of anti-establishment paroles. A-nar-chyyyyy!
As I entered, I had to stand myself next to the waxen Jon Bon Jovi and flash a wide grin for the photo which I could later buy for a fiver. However, as I browsed the box at the exit and fished out my photo, I was terrified - I looked so unbelievably stupid, fat and what have you, that I dropped everything and ran before somebody could start to convince me to pay 5 pounds for that!!!

Regent's Park

by kris-t

Regent's Park (officially The Regent's Park) is one of the Royal Parks of London. It is in the northern part of central London partly in the City of Westminster and partly in the London Borough of Camden. The park has an outer ring road called the Outer Circle (4.3km) and an inner ring road called the Inner Circle, which contains the most carefully tended section of the park, Queen Mary's Gardens.

Apart from a link road between these two, the park is reserved for pedestrians. The south, east and most of the west sides of the park are lined with elegant white stucco terraces of houses designed by John Nash. Running through the northern end of the park is Regent's Canal which connects the Grand Union Canal to the former London Docks.

Summer Festivals in Trafalgar Square

by angiebabe

There are various events held in popular Trafalgar Square throughout the summer and through the year - with the draw of being a central spot of top tourist sites its such a lovely spot to be any time of year and particularly nice on a fine summers day.

This year the stage set up for the Trafalgar Square festival has been combined with the excitement of the Olympic Games - of which London holds the next one in 2012 - with the Olympic events broadcast live on the stage screen.
