Info about Knightsbridge
by Mum2Carys
I am travelling to London in April with my mum & infant daughter, and we will be staying in the Knightsbridge area of London. We have rented a flat for the week and would like to know about the local markets and restaurants. We are staying in Rutland Gate. Thank you.

As far as markets go check out this website;
http://londonmarkets.co.uk/
If you like antiques & general bric-a-brac visit the Portobello Rd markets (just up the road from where you are staying).
Be sure to stop at Gail's Bakery 138 Portobello Rd Notting Hill
www.gailsbread.co.uk/?CategoryID=301
have a coffee & cake, breakfast or lunch, its wonderful & worth the trip even if you aren't into antiques!!
We had a lovely dinner at Richard Branson's Babylon, The Roof Gardens, 99 Kensington High Street, Kensington.

A five star, lovely dining experience.
Hope you have a wonderful trip

If by "local markets" you mean grocery stores and supermarkets you should use the website www.yell.com for London: you insert the type of business you are looking for (e.g. supermarket) and the post code of the place where you will be staying. By ticking the proper box a map ofthe area will appear, showing their locations.

Knightsbridge is a pretty upmarket area, not really the sort of place one expects to find markets With stalls, traders etc. The londonmarkets website given above will show you the nearest regular market for your needs.
There are, of course, some supermarkets, delicatessens etc in the immediate area. The ultimate may the food hall in Harrods, on Brompton Road:
http://www.harrods.com/food-and-wine
or the one in Harvey Nichols, on Knightsbridge itself:
http://www.harveynichols.com/
You can see restaurants, pubs etc near Knightsbridge Tube station mapped and listed here:

There is quite a bit of shopping choice not far from Knightsbridge in South Kensington or the Gloucester Road area. It's just a stop or two on the Tube to get to either.
A good place to ask about restaurants is on www.chowhound.com (UK/Ireland section). People there are very friendly and will give you great tips on where to eat. There are a lot of spots on Brompton Road and near Harrod's and Harvey Nichols towards Hyde Park Corner. Ishbilia is a terrific Lebanese restaurant there, and of course Harrod's is famous for its large food court.
Travel Tips for London
Currency Exchange
by St_Vincent
For money exchanging in London the best rates I have found are offered by a company called Thomas Exchange Global. They seem to have the smallest spread between buying and selling rates and there is zero commission.
They have offices at Victoria, near the coach and rail station, and The Strand, near Trafalgar Square. You can check current rates, locations and contact details via their website.

London Tip
by Jessy73081
While in London, the group I had toured with, had a performance in St. Paul's Cathedral. That was truly an amazing experience. The weather that day was absolutely beautiful. The people that I had encountered the whole time I was in London were quite delightful. I hope to visit London again, someday.
Attraction in Imperial War Museum

This is a special room something like cellar where you can experience the airstrike of German planes during WW II and then to browse through the bombarded street... quite interesting but not in reality :)
Explore the Underground
by Jenniflower
The underground has a long and interesting history, with some parts of it being over a century old! A nice thing to do if you have time is to get a one day travel card and go and explore!
On some platforms there is some lovely artwork to be seen, namely Gloucester Road and Charing Cross. You can also look into yesteryear by trying to locate the original station for the British Museum, which is found in the tube tunnel between Holborn and Tottenham Court Road (Central line). You could also try and see if you can see the old Lords Station, near St Johns Wood (Metropolitan line)
I haven?t seen them yet, I guess being a commuter doesn?t allow me the pleasures of much free time on the tube. But I will do this one day for sure!
Try and make this guy laugh
by b1bob
The special guard of the tower called Beef Eaters (I wonder if you can still get the job if you're a vegetarian) parade the inner ward in Tudor style uniforms. They have to have achieved a rank of at least Sergeant Major and served at least 22 years. Don't try and make these folks laugh. It's a waste of time. If I can't do it, none of y'all have a prayer.
