Craigslist
by hawkhead
I have come across some apartments for rent which are listed on Craigslist. Has anyone had any experience of renting an apartment/flat in LONDON (not interested in experiences in other cities) through Craigslist? This would be for a period of one week. I am totally ignorant when it comes to Craigslist - is it reliable? how is it regulated or is it just pot luck? what guarantees of quality does it have or again, is it just pot luck? Any tips/suggestions/advice greatly appreciated.

Potential for a great find.
Or a big mistake.
Read the guidelines and keep your wits about you.

I once almost thought that an apartment in New York was just ideal until I read more and instinctively felt that something was fishy. I emailed the Craigslist renter and got a pleasant reply answering a few test questions. But then knew that it was a scam when asked for a Deposit in advance paid using Pay Pal. It was a scam.
Apparently some low life regard this as a worthwhile way of making money.

That's very interesting - I have read further since posting the question and that info, coupled with your reply, certainly gives me pause! I think I will proceed with great caution, if at all.

Craigslist is simply an intermediary - there are no assurances, protections and garuantees.
However, my own experiences with it have generally been positive.

Proceed certainly but just be sensible. If you have doubt get a second opinion from a trusted friend. Don't part with money until you have checked as much as you possibly can with the advertiser - within reason. Don't forget that the advertiser also has risks of renting to the wrong types. So both should take precautions.

Many thanks - think I'll give it a miss.
Travel Tips for London
so many concerts!
by mindcrime
The first thing I do when I get to London is to buy TIME OUT magazine. Its a weekly bible of the nightlife (and more). It costs 2.50 pounds and comes out every wednesday and you can check out every concert, in every big or tiny venue, the prices, the times etc
Of course its very useful as a theatre guide, a film guide, for art exhibitions, for museums, for restaurants and and and and.... want more? :)
For major concerts do a your search through internet because the tickets will be sold out after a while!

London is London. I was there...

London is London. I was there for a conference and it was OK. But the best was when we left London to play golf in Wales and in southwest of England. Many very good sesides down there. Food was better than in Scotland, beer and whiskey the same.
Still Pounds and Pennies
by SLLiew
United Kingdom is still one of the few EU countries that has decided not to adopt Euro dollars and cents and stay with her own old currency of pounds and pennies.
So still have to change pounds whenever you go to UK.
Conversion:
1 Pound = 1.48933 Euro
1 Pound = 1.96220 US Dollar
At least UK has turned metric and we no longer have to convert between pennies, shillings, pound sterling. Just to know what is a quid.
Ghosts of the Tower
by rickyvilla81
Tower hill has seen thousands of executions, but Tower Green itself only saw seven, all of them private affairs for those with Royal connections. There have of course been a fair few killings and murders within the Tower's thick walls. Needless to say, there are one or two ghosts rattling around.
There is a particularly frightful scene that is said to repeat itself yearly on May 27 - that of the execution of the Countess of Salisbury. She was 72 years of age, and blankly refused to go. She fled the block and darted around the Green screaming. Eventually, the executioner got tired of this and caught her, hacking her to bits where she lay. Her ghost is still said to be heard screaming.
In the Bloody Tower, the ghost of Walter Raleigh has been seen floating up the stairs. He may have brought tobacco to Britain from the New World but don't ask him for a light.
Paying the Resturant Bill
by Cham
There are three ways this can be done...
all of them starting with, the argument over the bill
1) someone pays the bill in full, if someone pays the bill for you, buy them a few drinks at the next place you go, if you pay the bill, let them either buy the drinks are let you pay next time.
2) split the bill equally, no matter what everyone has ordered, this is usually done amongst close friends and when people have had a similar amount of food in the place.
3) split the bill but into what each person has had. usually works better when in a smaller group or in a place where people don't know each other too well.
and finally remember to tip... it's usually 10% here, some restuarants will add this onto the bill as a service charge... even though this is on the bill it is not compulsory to pay it.
INTERESTING FACT... the term "Tip" comes from the a box that used to be in restuarants in the victorian times. people would place money in the box "To Insure Prompt Service" this had T.I.P.S. on it.
