Budget accommodation in South Kensington

Bad (2.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on September 22, 2014

I booked this accommodation as part of a Superbreak deal for a weekend in London. South Kensington is an expensive area to stay in and the price quoted for the weekend with rail travel was very good.
Booking in is easy and the students from Imperial are very helpful and informative.
I did not realise that accommodation can be in any of the blocks around Princes Gardens and my block was the furthest from the main block.
Entering the block was through security doors opened by my key card. The block was new but lifeless and souless - I did not see another person when I was here. I was fine with this but for some people having to find the block and then the room (which was in the basement) may not be popular.
Breakfast was advertised as been in another block but I did not realise how far this was - a 5 minute walk which is fine on a dry day but in the rain perhaps a problem. The refectory was crowded, noisy and very basic. The cooked breakfast was not good - watery scrambled eggs and cheap , fatty bacon.
So in fairness to the University - a good income generation scheme in the summer when rooms are empty but food quality needs to be looked at.

Unique Quality: The room , when I found it was very good. Very clean and a bathroom that was the equal of some 4 star hotels. No television (fine with me) and a simple desk with a light , tea and coffee and a kettle and a chair at the desk. The bed was comfortable with good bedding and storage was excellent.
However the room was cold despite it been a warm September weekend. There was a radiator but no way of putting it on or off.
Coupled with poor eating facilities and the cold room I will not stay there again but at about £50 per night it is an acceptable charge for such a good area.
The website is quite honest about staying here and it will suit some travellers but not others.

Directions: Take the long foot tunnel from South Kensington station to Exhibition Road and Princes Gardens is across the road.

Cheap accommodation in summer

by written on July 20, 2003

This is my old college (university), and I know they rent out the halls of residence rooms to tourists in the summers.

Unique Quality: It is cheap and very central, 2 mins from Hyde Park, 10 mins from Knightsbridge, next door to Science Museum.

Directions: The office is off Exhibition Road.

Imperial College in the Summer...

by written on August 24, 2002

Imperial College in the Summer July-Sept every year - cheap accommodation in the centre of London.
Around £25 per night inc b&b.

Unique Quality: It's the college halls of Imperial College - v basic, sink and shared bathroom, no TV, tea making facilities, shared kitchen. Eat as much as you can breakfast in the morning
