Black Cab Fare

by TA7DS

What fare can I expect to pay from St. Pancras train station to an address in KT5 on a Thursday afternoon around 2pm

thanks

Re: Black Cab Fare

You can get a rough idea of taxi fares from the official London transport site here:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/taxisandminicabs/taxis/1140.aspx

Note that no-one knows what the traffic will be like when you travel and that the fare depends on time taken as well as distance.

But KT5 is the postcode for an area of Kingston-on-Thames borough, which is not central London but Greater London. A taxi will not come cheap: it's 14+ miles. I suspect you are looking at 40-50GBP+.

Nearest railway station to the KT5 area is Surbiton. www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you train times, details and fares.

If you use the very informative

http://www.worldtaximeter.com/london

and for start put St Pancras International and for end put your final address, it should produce a good estimate. I just did that and it gave £58.
An alternative would be to get a taxi from St Pancras to Waterloo Station (about £12) then take a train to Surbiton (£5 one way)taking about 20 minutes.

Thank you both that is very useful info.

lol, the airfare into London is less than the cab ride!

Re: Black Cab Fare

by leics

That is not in the least bit surprising.

Use public transport. Still not cheap in comparison with much of Europe, but cheaper than using a taxi.

Re: Black Cab Fare

by TA7DS

that's true...

I've bee to Surbiton before and always relied on public transport, but this time with 3 people in my party, thought might as well travel in style

how much would be saved if we changed tube to train to on foot, not to forget dragging the luggage (although light)

not sure if I am still sounding naive?? :)

Re: Black Cab Fare

by leics

How much would be saved?

Well, 3 x Tube fare St P to Waterloo = 3 x 4GBP unless you have Oyster cards, in which case it will be 3 x 1.80GBP.

Train fare Waterloo > Surbiton = 3 x 5GBP.

Total = 27GBP max.

Saving at least 50%, I think, unless you need a taxi when you get to Surbiton?

Re: Black Cab Fare

thanks for putting on the mathematical spin leics

inclination now goes to saving a few quids for a gastronomical treat

cheers!!

I always use public transport abroad, and only take a taxi here if there are no alternatives (i.e. once in a blue moon).

I'd rather spend the money on something else too.

Travel Tips for London

There is more to England than just London

by bob1980

London is a fantastic INTRODUCTION to the United Kingdom. But you are more likely to meet an American, Australian or South African than you are to meet a genuine English person. Because the normal people avoid the tourists and the rest of it.
Dont get me wrong, its a fantastic place with lots to see and plenty of things to do and if you've only got a week then go for it.
But if you want something more, if you want to see what England and its people are realy about then look into travelling outside the capital. Arriving
Experiencing London
then leaving
is a little bit like going to Disneyland for 2 weeks and saying you know what America is realy like.

London is one of the oldest...

by MrGQ

London is one of the oldest cities in the world. Here in the states we brag about size. The Biggest School, Biggest Building, biggest mall etc ..
In London, it is about age! The oldest Church, The oldest Castle, The oldest Queen . etc :)

There is a lot of history in London and a fairly diverse culture. You will notice there is a very strong ethnic backgrounds from the former British colonies in London. This will be evident in the many Indian and West Indian resturants and bars and of course people.

FREE London: TNT Magazine

by M0B1US

These travellers magazines are found outside all the main central London main line train stations and many tube stations. They are FREE to take and are a great read!

Targetted on the huge backpacker and working holiday population of mainly Aussies, Kiwis and Saffers it is a goldmine for cheap accommodation, travel deals, entertainment and offers in London as well as the rest of the World with pages and pages of hostels and cheap hotel listings for beds as cheap as £10 a night in the centre of London!

If you're thinking of staying and working in London this is also a one stop bible for everything you'll need about getting a job, sorting out the paperwork, finding friends and making London pay for you!

On top of that there are all the usual reviews of bars and places to see etc, plus news from around the world and features such as the running of the bulls in Pamplona... SX Magazine, another free mag found in the same places as TNT is more entertainment orientated and even has a free weekly TV listing... ;-)

Aussies, Kiwis and Saffers are also catered for with their own free weekly newspapers...

London Tip

Down at the basement of ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL lies the Tomb of Lord Nelson (remember the monument at Trafalgar Square? Yup, that's also dedicated to this great man). Please slap yourself if you don't know who Lord Nelson is... :-)

White wedding dress used in England

by gussymons

It is customary for the bride to wear a white wedding dress on her wedding day in England

Originally banned by Henry VIII during a six-week drinking bout, Sir Thomas More persuaded Henry to recant the unpopular law and bring back the white dress.

This time, the white of the dress symbolises the aspirin tablets (which are white) given to Henry by his physicians to heal his drunken shenanigans.

And thats a fact.
