Stay Away

This place should not call itself a hotel. When I arrived late at night, I had to wait 20 minutes outside the hotel in the cold before the person at the front desk showed up to open the door. Then he gave me a key and told me to cross the street and go to another building where the room is. when I told him I want to be in the building where the hotel actually is he first said there is no room and then told me there is room in the basement with no widows. I had to leave in the middle of the night as the situation was so bad. The hotel charged me even though I never statey there and is not responding to any of my requests to refund the money. STAY AWAY.

by wmjunejo

Can you advice the cheapest way to travel from London to Edinburgh and Mancheter on way back to London ? Plan to travel with spouse in end July 2010.

Appreciate support in advance.

Have a look at www.nationalexpress.co.uk for coach options and prices.

And look at the Advance purchase rail options on www.nationalrail.co.uk
Some bargains if you are sure that you can make a particular train at the time booked.

And flying London-Edinburgh is always an option but although some seats are cheap remember you have to get to the airport and pass through security etc etc !
See www.easyjet.com as an example of budget airline. But read the small print.

As Puerto says, cheapest way to travel is usually by long-distance bus (coach). National Express is the major carrier but Megabus also run the London>Edinburgh and the Manchester>London segments. Timetables, fares, online booking here:

http://www.megabus.com/uk/

If you consider flying London>Edinburgh remember to factor in the time & cost of transfer to/from the airport. www.skyscanner.net will give you cheapest fares for your route & dates. For example, you can fly from Gatwick with Easyjet on 29/7 for 26.99GBP.....but may have to add on hold baggage costs.

try thetrainline.com to book cheap tickets in advance. Generally, the closer to departure, the more expensive. National Express or Megabus would be very cheap but will take several hours to get from London to Edinburgh.

Travel Tips for London

SAVE IN ADVANCE!!!

by LoveGypsy

The Tower of London is so very cool. It is so incredibly rich in history that you can say entertained for most of the afternoon. Plus, in combination with the statistics of who all died there and how much royalty graced its walls, if for nothing else - it's just plain cool!

Take a guided tour. The yeoman warders add alot of spice to the tour and it doesn't last but maybe 45 mins. Most of the grounds are open for self guiding.

You can see: The crown jewels, the ravens that guard the grounds superstitiously, artifacts galore, and much much more!

Also - IF YOU ARE INTO THEATRE...you must check out SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE....I am a theatre major myself - so this was amazing for me. They have restored it to what they believe it was like in its original day. And even for a modern theatre its impecable. Stand on the floor like a groundling for a real show! I took a double-decker bus tour through the city. Although I was jet-lagged and kept nodding off, it was incredibly relaxig and took you through most all of London. It was nice b/c I didn't have to mess with actually going to all of those places by foot. I saw what I needed to see and that was that. The weather was magnificent (mid september) and it was all in all just absolutely lovely. This particular tour cost about 16 pounds, and included a river boat tour of the Thames - but I never made it.

Definitely let someone else drive you around and tell you everything you need to know. But by all means - experience some local culture as well.

Brick Lane

by huggy93

Well in my intro I started a 'day in the life of Haysie, Huggy and James' and I kinda run out of space so now let me continue.... Well Brick Lane and East London are part of my favourite parts of London. There is a real vibrancy in the area. It's great for shopping but it has it own unique vibe....

Westminster Abbey

by CandS

The Westminster Abbey is an amazing building. The Abbey was built in the 13th century but has had additions in the 16th and 18th centuries.

The opening hours are Monday to Friday 9:30 am to 4:45 pm, Saturday 9:30 am to 2:45 pm. Last admission one hour before closing time.

No one listens to you ?

You should go to Speakers Corner. This is situated in Hyde Park and every Sunday morning anyone can speak about any topic they like, so long as they are not obscene or blasphemous. Don't expect too much from the speeches as some can be a bit poor, but nevertheless there can also be some great entertainment here !

Buskers

by luke850

You will notice a number of people busking on the streets of central London. Some are simply terrible, are doing it to make a little money, and to be quite honest you'd happily pay them just to stop. However, a number of the buskers in London are actually very good. These are budding musicians, who are playing to be heard, rather than for the money. If you enjoy their music, drop some change in their box to show your appreciation.
