London to Paris by car

by hotdaymnitzbao

Does anyone know how long it takes to drive from London to Paris by car? And which rental companies offer pickup in London and drop off in Paris?

Re: London to Paris by car

You can do it quickly using the Channel Tunnel. I would estimate 6 hours.
Do you need a car for this trip ? Is going by other transport easier ? Plenty of options.
A one way drop off fee from any of the major rental companies is going to be very large.
The car cannot be used in Paris for rental as (a) in France you drive on the 'wrong' side of the road and (b) the car is set up for UK roads.

One way rentals between the UK and the continent are depending on the rental company.
a) not possible
b) very expensive.

For example: Avis doesn't offer them. Hertz does, but charges 400UKP for it.
Do you really want to do this?

Take the train from the centre of London to the centre of Paris.

EuroStar takes 2 1/2 hours from London to Paris. What a great way to travel. Would love to have more and better train travel in the United States.

Rich - maybe Mr. Obama will help you out. :-) I've never understood why the U.S. (my home country) never took advantage of modern high speed technology for trains other than the Acela on the East Coast. We sure missed out. I take the Eurostar often, and it's fantastic.

The word Lobbiest comes to mind. Oil and car lobbiest have been very strong for many years. But if you take a look at the history of rail in the U.S. it is interesting to note that in the 1800's and especially the late 1800's before the automobile the train industry was very strong, but also run by several powerful men who were slow to react to the advent of the coming of the automobile era

The two most important factors explaining the difference in rail travel in Europe an the US are:
- Population density. Most of the US is just to empty to justify train service. Only if there is enough demamd to fill a train about every hour does a train service make sense.
- Regulations. The US railindustry is very regulated, and especially the crash norms US passenger trains have to comply with make US trains about twice as heavy as their European counterparts, making it impossible to achieve the efficiencies some European and Japanse railways achieve.

Thanks for your input, K V B. It's true that much of the U.S. has empty spaces. Even with the regulations, I don't see why more Acecla-type routes couldn't have been done on busy routes as on both sides of the country north to south etc.

The Obama government is spending millions on improving very, very small airports all around the country. (That's my field of expertise.) Some of these airports have very few flights a day, and I wonder if it's money well spent.

Travel Tips for London

When I first went to London...

by Travellgirl

When I first went to London the thing I wanted to see the most was Buckingham Palace. You hear so much about it and to see it is great. I know its a touristy thing to do. I love just walking the streets of London. Watching the people, going shopping and sitting and watching the world go by. Convent Gardens is great and I like to have a meal here.

I still can't forget the mural I saw on Abbey Rd. I know Marcus was a Beatles-fan and that's why we _had_ to see Abbey Rd. Anyway, though I resisted, we got there. When Marcus went all 'ooh' nad 'wow', I had some time to look around, and yes, there it was, a mural. Very simple and pretty. All it read was 'Brits out of Ireland'. They had chosen a very visible spot to write that thing down and I was very surprised to find something like this in such an 'important' place. But well, then I had even something to go 'ooh' and 'wow' about. ..yeah, right.. Anyone there who'd know what happened to the little mural? I don't think it was there long. I don't even know who it was who draw it. TOM? Maybe, I don't know. But it was an interesting experience. Here in Finland there ain't that many political or meaingfull wall-writings, so that's the reason I found it so fascinating.

See the Tower Bridge -...

by O.KATALINA

See the Tower Bridge - no...this is NOT the LONDON BRIDGE...you know the one in the song we sang 'London Bridge is Falling Down, falling down, falling down...'? The Beefeater took great pain to explain to us that the actual London bridge is just further down the Thames river, a nondescript flat and ordinary bridge that is nowhere as beautiful as this one! I actually learnt that almost EVERY tourist, including moi here, thought this Tower Bridge is London Bridge. One story goes that there was this rich man who saw the Tower Bridge, thought that it was London Bridge, actually went to see the authorities to buy the London Bridge. The authorities, who could not see why anybody would want the ugly London bridge, nontheless agreed. When the rich man realised his mistake, he was horrified! Well, can you blame him? Poor thing!

Respect the buskers

You're very likely to see street musicians performing around London. They may be playing on the open streets in the populated areas or underground in the Tube system as part of a public programme run by the Tube. Either way, they're depending on public support. If you like the music, consider tossing a few coins their way.

They're people like anyone else, and if you are really interested in their music or instrument, why not try striking up a conversation? You might get some leads on where to go in London for your particular style. Just remember that any time spent talking is time not spent playing, and they can't earn any money if they're not playing, so if you do stop and talk to them it is only fair and polite to give a donation before you leave.

(Do you like this tip? Please rate it, thanks!)

You will find that London has...

You will find that London has a lot of homeless people who may ask you for change. My advice if you want to help people is to buy a copy of the Big Issue from a vendor on the street for £1 as the 40p of the money you pay goes to the person who is selling it.
