If you want to be VERY central but don't mind basic accommodation (ie clean but a bit shabby and not ensuite) then have a look at the Regents Palace Hotel in Piccadilly

It was comfortable but the rooms need redecoration. It is really conveniently situated though, and right by the tube station.

Ive stayed there a couple of times - have a look at my London page to find out more.

I can recommend the Holiday Inn Express London City... it is in Old Street, and you can use the tube or the bus to get to Westminster and Waterloo Station from which the trains leave for Paris. The hotel is located in Hoxton, an exciting, bohemian part of the city.

I paid 75 pounds for a pretty good en-suite room and a Continental breakfast. Some interesting affordable restaurants and bars nearby. The price is per room, so also valid for 2 people sharing.

Although it has been a four years, I found that you paid for location in places downtown like Piccadilly. I found better value in the Earl's Court area and still felt we were in a safe area. Although you needed to tube to get around unless you really liked walking.

One thing to realise about London is that the oldest part of London is the area north of London Bridge and Tower Bridge. This is known as the City of London and is the old financial district.

The Entertainment area is known as the West End, further to the west, north of Westminster,Charing Cross and Waterloo bridges.

Most tourists stay in the West End, with lots of hotels in Bloomsbury/Kings Cross, Victoria and Bayswater.

For a first timer I would join the merry throng that head towards the cheap hotels opposite Kings Cross station. If you have more money then stay in Covent Garden which is just about as central as you can get. With lots of the major sights in walking distance.
