London live folk music

by hikeup

We will be in London next weekend. Are there any places where we could find live folk music?

Thanks

Funny you should ask that!

I will be playing in the Hemingford Arms, Hemingford Road, N1 on Saturday night from about 8:30 onwards with a bunch of mates. It is a going away party for a piper / whistle player who is emigrating and promises to be a bit of an evening. You would be most welcome.

Hope to see you there.

Travel Tips for London

Go to theater, you can see...

by Buffy_N

Go to theater, you can see 'stars' like madonna, matt damon, summer phoenix or gwyneth palrow just like normal people! and cheap! This time it was just a short stop, till my plane would take off to Hannover again.
I had about 8 Hours to shop. But it was terrible.
I toke the train, but there was a bomb warning, I was pissed off. So I left at Oxford Street, with no map.
Walking arround, everything was strange,so much change since my last visit.
Commpared to USA the people are dressed in a strange way, I didn´t liked it.
I went back to the airport and spend 3 or 4 hours waiting for my flight to depared.

Pub names

by filipdebont

At certain Pubs you can read the history behind the Pub name.
Outside the Pub there is a green board which explains the history of the place and its name.

Like on this board which says :

FOUNTAINS ABBEY - Paddington W2

Paddington has always adequately provided hospitality for travellers in the form of local ale houses.
The fountains Abbey opened in 1824 and has been a popular meeting house from the early days.

Sir Alexander Fleming was a loyal regular to the Fountains Abbey.

Legend says that it was mould spores from this ale house which blew through Fleming's window, leading him to the discovery of Penicillin in 1928.

The Fountains Abbey derived its name from two different sources, "Fountains"marks nearby sites of early known springs and wells which were of great importance of inhabitants, "Abbey"stems from Westminster Abbey which possessed the manor of Paddington during Saxon times hence the name "Fountains Abbey"

Albert Memorial

by pili

Queen Victoria had this memorial built in 1872, in honour of her late and much loved husband, Prince Albert, who died in 1861.
You´ll find it in Kensington Gardens directly opposite the Royal Albert Hall.-

Tube etiquette

by JulesH

Londoners hate disruption to their everyday lives, and unfortunately a tourist with a suitcase blocking their route out of the tube doors can represent just this. Mornings are worse than evenings so here are some pointers to help you avoid the wrath of the grouchy morning commuter.

1. Don't lean on the doors. This can cause the train to lose power and strand the train in the tunnel. Not a way to win any popularity competitions.

2. Always stand to one side to let passengers off the train before you try to cram into the carriage with your family and suitcases. The driver won't leave without you if they see you are trying to board. And even if they do, there will be another one along in a minute.

3. If you see someone who needs a seat more than you it is good manners to offer your seat to them. There are priority seats near the doors which should always be offered in these situations, but it is always a decent thing to do.

4. Be aware that loud conversations can grate a bit in the mornings. Not saying you shouldn't talk, but try to be considerate and keep the noise down to a decent level. After all, you're on holiday...your fellow passengers are off to work and are probably not happy about being awake!

5. Move right down inside the carriage, in between the seats and don't block the doorways. Be aware of your fellow passengers who want to get off the carriage and move aside quickly to minimise delays.

6. I know heaving your backpack on and off your back is a pain, but it is appreciated in the confines of a crowded carriage.

7. Finally, smile! You never know...you might be able to persuade some of us to do it too :)

Batteries, umbrellas, and jackets, OH MY!

by elizabooper

Bring a jacket in case its a bit chilly. A good idea is to check online a few days ahead of time to see what the weeks forcast may be. In America we use Ferenheit, but in Europe (at leaste London) they use Celcius. Bring some extra batteries or film because it is quite expensive, especially in London. If you have rechargable batteries, you may need an adaptor to use it while in another country. Voltage converter or an outlet converter is something to check into when you are wanting to use electronics from home. I used one for a hairdryer with dual voltage on it, but some hotels have hairdryers to rent during your stay. Make sure to check with your hotel before leaving to see if any would be necessary.
