Changing of the guard

by manuna

I know that it is quite popular and many people come to watch it. In my guidebook it is said that it's better to watch it from "other point at St.James Park or Birdcage Walk". I can't understand it. Do the guards go through these points or these places are higher and that is why it is easier to watch from there?

If you look at a map the Guards Barracks are on Birdcage Walk., That is where the group going 'on duty' comes from, and the group going 'off duty' returns to.
But the actual changing ceremony takes place right in front of the Palace.

You might also be interested in the Changing of the Guard at Horseguards Parade. This is the mounted group. Takes place at 11.00.

Unless you have tons of extra time I wouldn't spend my time standing around waiting for a few minutes of seeing what is offered.

That was the question I wanted to ask, but now I have no more doubts:)

The changing of the horsemounted guards is really great because you can get right up close & be right amongst the action without the big crowds that are all at Buckingham palace.
Go & do the palace at early in the morning ie 9am & then wander down the mall to catch the change.
It takes place at Horseguards parade ground in horseguards rd.

For us, it was the other way round (July, 2010). We went to see the changing of the guards at the Horseguards parade ground first (horse-mounted guards change duty). Then we walked briskly past the park towards Buckingham Palace for the other changing of the guards (regular guards on foot changed duty). However, the palace one is far more impressive with the new guards marching in from one end, entering the palace gates, performing the ceremonial handing over/taking over of duties and the relieved guards marching out down the road, all with the band playing. Also, with Queen Victoria looking on benevolenty, plenty more photo ops. than the other changing of the (horses) guard!
From Birdcage Walk, as well as from St. James Park, the spectacle can be seen in its entirety (almost cinemascope, as in days of yore). However, a compromise is to be made: you go real close to the iron gates/railing, you see a portion of the parade only; you go to a vantage point, your view gets obstructed by the iron gate, railing, lamposts and statues. As they say, you win some, you lose some!

Travel Tips for London

Practical help during sightseeing

by mmaauurroo

walking through Soho is really something. Before visiting UK I've found on http://www.visitbritain.co.uk/about-britain/image-and-sound-gallery/mobile.aspx great UK & London guide for mobile phones. It was easy to navigate while having my mobile phone full of useful information and maps. They have made a great job offering it for free!Definitely, I'll be back to London in near future. The best shopping ever.

Just take in all the sights...

by Taysgrandma

Just take in all the sights and sounds. It is a city rich in history. It was wonderful to see all the old parts of the city and how they fit in with the newer more modern things. Westminster Abbey. This is my most favortie place, that I saw, while in London. We didn't get to see too much of the entire city, just the big attractions, but it was definitely worth every minute and dime spent. Would love to go back again, someday
