London accommodation, HELP!

by jerryttk

I have a friend who has booked a single room in Carr Saunders Hall, LSE. Now I need to find a room nearby to that. Can anyone please advise me which hostel should I choose below?

1. Oxford Street Youth Hostel
2. St Pancras Youth Hostel.
3. Passfield Hall
4. Carr-Saunders Hall

I am a student, so money is a factor, but of course I hope to find a decent one which I can have a good rest after a day's visit to the great city London. Please help me.

Travel Tips for London

When visiting London you must...

by lm1278

When visiting London you must see all the tourist sights of course, but you also must visit all the local pubs and get to know the people as well. I miss all of London, the whole way of life and living in a safe city.

Tipping

by gloopgloop

Many restaurants add a ‘discretionary’ service charge to your bill, but in places that don’t you are expected to leave a 10% to 15% tip unless the service was unsatisfactory. Waiting staff are often paid derisory wages on the assumption that the money will be supplemented by tips. It’s legal for restaurants to include a service charge in the bill but this should be clearly advertised.

You don’t need add a further tip. You never tip to have your pint pulled in a pub but staff at bars now often return change in a little metal dish, expecting some of the coins to glue themselves to the bottom. If you take a boat trip on the Thames you’ll find some guides and/or drivers asking for a tip in return for their commentary. Whether you pay is up to you.

Hampstead - "my house" again...

by dvideira

Well, at least it is a different photo :-)
My dream house, in pink and green ( the colors of my favorite samba school in here, Mangueira ). It was love at first sight and sigh.

As I told before, I used to go back there and pass by just to look at it. And I was so curious about who actually lived in there. I almost wrote a story in my mind.

Next time I go there, I hope to being able to find it again.

Blue plaques

by uglyscot

All over London one is likely to come across round blue plaques attached to the walls of certain buildings. These are to show the residence or birthplace of personalities from different walks of life- politicians, artists, writers, actors, scientists, musicians etc.

The one I have shown is of the Italian patriot Giuseppe Mazzini who lived at 187 Euston Street , London

On other buildings there are brown plaques which perform a similar function, but the people they remember have usually been chosen by a society or other body.
Or as in Marylebone a wall engrave with Dickens and some characters.

AC outlet adaptor.

by AVSENT

Get a multi country AC electric outlet adaptor. Most european countries have a different plug for electric appliances (Laptop computers/hair dryers). For about ten bucks get one before travel to avoid problems later. Get one that is universal and can be used in alot of different countries to avoid getting one for each time you travel to another place.
