Visit Bayswater not upmarket but we like it.
We stay in Bayswater most times we are in London.,
We have walked around the area only 2 weeks ago.(October 2009) You can walk to Paddington and Paddington station in one direction.
You can cross Bayswater Road and there you are in Kensington Gardens /Hyde Park so that leads to many delights.
You can cross to Knightsbridge and there is Harrods and then tube it back easily to Queensway or Lancaster Gate (change at Holborn )
You can walk to Marble Arch and Oxford St.
Bayswater is not exactly upmarket but it is handy and there is a good hairdresser Jon at HQ Hair ...also a healthy food shop ?Pret just before the shopping centre.(Movies on top floor too) There are many cheap souvenir shops with countless toys.
The internet cafe I prefer is the one on Bayswater Road as it is open with easy access ...maybe a tiny bit dearer.
Assoiated with this cafe is Royal Bayswater Hostel which seems very popular and has a good range of facilities.
The "hop on" bus picks up on Bayswater Road and regular buses go that way too.
Oh and if you like a little "flutter" the Gala Casino is right there. You have to join of course..no charge. Serves nice meals too.
We are comfortable in this area and have never had a problem.
