Cheap and Cheerful

As I like to go to London every couple of months I was looking for a cheap and cheerful hotel near to a tube line. The Swinton hotel is just that.
The room is basic although it does have tea making facilities [with complimentary packets of biscuits] and a TV.
The staff are friendly and always on call 24 hours.
Breakfast is basic, Tea, coffee, toast, cereals and croissants.

Convenient for the railway stations & underground

The hotel is in Kings Cross, Central London, and a short walk from Kings Cross Railway Station. The rooms are ensuire and there are a variety of rooms with comfortable beds available for everyone. I would recommend reserving a room at the back of the hotel because Swinton Street is always busy and noisy even during the night. I had trouble sleeping because of this but would recommend the hotel as a convenient base for exploring.

Unique Quality: The hotel is convenient as a base because of the proximity to Kings Cross Railway Station and the Underground. Continental breakfast is included and you get a nice selection and generous portions. There is a left luggage storage facility and a safetly deposit box available at recpetion to store your valuables. There is a 24 hour reception so there is no need to worry about being locked out if one decides to have a night out on the town!

Cheapish, central hotel with free internet

Compact hotel close to Kings Cross station, the big bonus for me is the free wireless internet access, invaluable these days in the big city! Swinton Hotel is pleasant enough for me to return there on several occasions. Rooms are clean enough and come in a variety of sizes and furnishings, some soul-less and basic, others with some character. I wouldn't trust the photo on the website! I read that the single rooms were tiny and booked a double room for myself as a treat! Fortunately my rooms have been very quiet at the back of the hotel, though there is a busy, noisy road at the front. Sound-proofing between the rooms is fairly minimal however. Good supply of scalding hot water in the bathrooms.

Useful to have a reception staffed 24 hrs per day. Breakfast was also very adequate, no fry-up thankfully, just a plentiful supply of cereal, toast, croissants, cheese and ham, washed down with juice and tea/coffee. Lots of take-aways and restaurants nearby for evening meals.

Altogether very straightforward and bearable experience, from what is evidently a respectable hotel, and considerably cheaper than the chain hotels nearby.

The Swinton Hotel in London

The Swinton Hotel in King's Cross.
This hotel was a bit nicer (and more expensive) with a better food/dining experience vs. the Apollo Hotel.
They switched our room after the first night which was mildly inconvenient, but the 2nd room was a better room. Rooms were clean, bed was OK. Staff were pleasant. The drawback here is that it was several blocks away from the King's Cross tube stop. 8-12 minutes which was a bit of a hike with bags. Not dreadful, but not great either. I'd consider staying again. But I'd probably look for somplace in the same price range a bit closer to the tube.

Unique Quality: None really.

Recommendations on B& B or hotel between London and Luton

by vespadisco

Anyone have an opinion on an economical place to spend the night before my 11:20 flight out of Luton.
I'm figuring it makes sense to stay with 30 minutes of the Airport.

Thank you!

Right at Luton Airport, or within walking distance (0.2/0.3 miles) there is both an Express by Holiday Inn and a Days Inn. Within 2 miles there an Ibis and a Thistle Hotel, and there are hotels within Luton itself, plus other hotels within a 10mile radius. Google "Hotels Luton Aiport" for the full choice.

Thanks Hawkhead,

Let me rephrase that a bit...

If flying out of Luton at 11:20, what neighborhood/hotels would offer the most interesting combination of thrifty accomodations, British aesthetics, and convenience to Luton Airport. If your above answer still holds that's great. If you think getting up 20 minutes earlier to experience a stay in a more interesting town/hotel would be worthwhile please advise if possible.

Thanks again!

I stayed at The Generator, where I only payed 16 pounds per night. It only took me 30 min to get to the airport form the nearest subway/tram station.

Thank you all for your ideas.

We ended up at the Apollo Hotel in Kings Cross.
Room was tiny. Had not bothered to finish painting the walls. Food/dining area was nothing to cheer about. Cheaper than most and served our purposes for one night. Location 1 block from King's Cross tube was ideal (not too close to station- so a bit quieter than some other hotels on that street). We chose King's Cross for easy access to Thames Link train to Luton Airport. Glad we stayed in London and not Luton. Thames Link was easy 35 minute train ride from King's Cross. Plenty of time to get to our 11:20AM flight.

On our return to London we stayed at the Swinton Hotel also in KIng's Cross. This hotel was a bit nicer (and more expensive) with a better food/dining experience. They switched out room after the first night which was mildly inconvenient, but the 2nd room was a better room. Rooms were clean, bed was OK. The big drawback here is that it was several blocks away from the King's Cross tube stop. 8-12 minutes which was a bit of a hike with bags.
