liked this too

Stayed several times, because my work often took me to that part of the city (opposite the Thames, near the law courts and Fleet Street).

It had an old fashioned quality to it which is not my favourite style, but when I looked up its website I found it is now part of Swissotel. Probably just what it needed!

Comfortable, even luxurious.

Great Location and Views

This is a great choice if you're looking for a four star in central London. It seems to be a close walk to almost everywhere and offers great views of the Thames and all its wonderful buildings. More of a businessperson clientelle though so if you're young looking for a hip crowd, this might not be your place.

The hotel with the best view of the river

This hotel is not cheap, a room with river view cost 195 pounds a night, but the view is awesome, as I have shown here in the photo. My room is clean and the bedding is comfortable. The in-room espresso machine is such a nice touch! Staff are friendly and helpful, on one occasion, one of the concierge even ran up the street to get me a taxicab. Its proximity to Covent Garden is a big plus. I would pick this hotel over any stuffy hotels in town.

Good location, good hotel

The hotel is ideally located in central London, only minutes walk to Covent Garden, Theatre district, Chinatown, Trafalgar square... Recently renovated it has a very high standard for the furnishing, beds are very , very comfortable. Added touch is a real italian coffee maker in the rooms. The food is also excellent with french and asian cuisine.
It's situated right accross the Thames so make sure you book, for a supplement, a river view room (you can see Big Ben, London Eye and the Tower Bridge).
Two minus however, the staff is very polite and experienced but a bit cold. The price is a bit high so they could have included the continental breakfast which cost about Usd 35.

Misleading descriptions!

by A TripAdvisor Member

This is a lovely hotel but the description of the views from the rooms is very misleading! The hotel describes its rooms as having either a river or garden view. After reading some of the reviews in this site we decided on a garden view. I was so disappointed when we saw our room - the window was huge and overlooked a concrete building, we had to crane our necks to see the garden, and it didn't even look that impressive!
So beware - if you chose a garden view this isn't necessarily what you get!!! Other than that it was a nice hotel but wouldn't go back.

Superb Hotel - Loved it

This superb hotel takes a lot of beating. This is the second time we have stayed there, and this time we had a suite with a river view.

The suite was lovely - total luxury and modern.

The view was superb - in fact we never closed the curtains!

We had breakfast in our room which was a real treat - and included in our booking.

Excellent Hotel--We Loved It!

We stayed at the Swissotel from Sept 2-6, and absolutely loved it. We had an amazing view of the river. I definitely recommend getting a room w/ a river view. It is worth it. Out room was quite nice as well. No complaints at all. The location was very convenient--just a few minutes walk to Covent Garden, and the Temple tube stop is directly across the street. The restaurant at the hotel also has a garden, which was quite a nice place to have drinks before heading out or even for a night cap. The weather was great while we were there, so we did both. I would definitely stay here again. It was a pleasure.

Very nice indeed, river view room is a must, stunning by day, awesome by night. All staff were extremely polite and professional, food was wonderful. Great location, a definate thumbs up 5 star hotel

Would stay again

This is a good place to stay in London, it is centrally located, and there is an Underground stop just outside the door (the stop is closed sunday). We stayed for four nights in November, aside from not having the friendliest staff and the lobby being very smokey it is a decent hotel. There are not many amenities to speak of, and it is more of a business hotel than for the tourist.

Fantastic view!

by TripAdvisor Member jessicaboo

I stayed here with my husband for a theatre break weekend in September and we absolutley loved it.
The room we stayed was extremely spacious and comfortable with a separate living area and coffee maker. The best bit were the floor to ceiling windows along one whole wall which gave us a fabulous view of the Thames which by night was just awesome.
The check-in staff were a little frosty but other than that everyone we met was very helpful and the service was very efficient.
Overall i cannot fault this hotel but do make sure you get a room with the Thames view!

Swisshotel The Howard London

by Glen30

Hi there,

could someone let me know how I can get to this hotel from Gatwick Airport with the trains.

Swissotel The Howard, London
Temple Place
London WC2R 2PR

Is the METRO within walking distance from the hotel.

Thanks
Glen

The hotel website has a useful page with map and directions.

There is no Metro in London. You can take the Tube (Circle/District line) to Temple station, which is directly opposite the hotel.

Information on transport from Gatwick here:

http://www.londontoolkit.com/travel/gatwick_transport.htm

You have several choice, with the Gatwick Express train being fastest and most expensive (apart from taxi).

Once you have arrived at Victoria (Gatwick Express) or London Bridge (Gatwick Connect) you can then transfer to the Tube.

Tube map here (not a download):

http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/travel/downloads/tube_map.html

You may prefer to get a taxi from the London station rather than take the Tube with luggage (you will have to change Tube lines from either station).

From Gatwick you could take one of the FIRST CAPITAL CONNECT trains through London Bridge and on to BLACKFRIARS. At Blackfriars you could walk to the hotel in about 10 or 15 minutes. Or hail a taxi for the short journey.
Obviously look at the web site for times as some disruptions especially if you travel at weekend.

ww, looks like you need to change quite a few times.....

Thanks for the advice..

Re: Swisshotel The Howard London

No. You don't need to 'change'. Believe me.

Re: Swisshotel The Howard London

If you get off at Blackfriars (but only using the Connect train), as Puerto suggests, then you only need to change from train to feet or taxi. Blackfriars Tube station is, unfortunately, closed for renovations at the moment.

Otherwise you will need to make some Tube changes. Or you could simply take a taxi from Victoria/wherever to your hotel.
