The London Tube Would Be a Better Bet

As the title suggests, you'd find better accomodations in the Tube itself than at this pit of a hotel. Where to begin? Staff--horribly rude, unbearably slow, lazy, arrogant, and totally unaccomodating. Room--dirty, grungy, tiny (two people cannot fit in a double room), and a broken window. Bathroom--tiny and filthy. Facilities--no A/C, cannot make calls from the hotel at all (local or otherwise) except for to and from the reception desk. No payphone within a 5 min walk either. They have a lift, but it will fit two people without luggage, or one person with luggage. It is excruciatingly slow and very unreliable. Breakfast--not too much of a let down because we weren't expecting much anyway. Offered coffee, tea, rolls, sandwich meat and cheeses, cereal, hard-boiled eggs, and yogurt. Coffee was horrendous. Location--fantastic. Just 5 minutes from Paddington Tube and Train stations. Hard to get lost. If you like the Paddington area, choose another hotel--or stay in the Tube itself. ;-)

Now, you might think that I am just being totally picky, and may have never experienced accomodations in London before. Not so. This was my 4th time in London and have stayed at some decent places for about the same price, in the same area. My expectations were a small, clean room with friendly staff. I was not expecting a lift, nor was I expecting a typical American sized room, or for the staff to bend over backwards to accomodate my crazy whims. My expectations were very realistic, and were far from met.

Not such a good choice!

Well....surely wasn't what we expected, but hey, it added to the experience!! The price was right, and we weren't in the room much anyways!!!

Unique Quality: Great Location, and hey.....who needs a classy hotel!?

More about The Ascot Hotel

Ascot located across from Paddington station

by candell about The Ascot Hotel

When booking on line it is extremely hard to get a feel for a hotel. I was looking for one that would house a family of four in 1 room on a budget. Easy to do in the US, not so much in London. I did finally find a hotel that would accomodate us for about $95. This was in 2005 during New Years. The location was great across the street from Paddington Station. The room was on the fifth floor and the lift was broken. We noticed that on each floor they had the same print of a guy on a horse in the country. Sometimes a floor would have 2 or 3 of the same print in the hallway. Anyway we finally got up to our room, went to put something in the refrigerator, none there. Just an empty hole. the fixtures on the tub had tape holding them together. However the beds were pretty comfortable. During the night the room became uncomfortably hot, so we opened the windows. We also just put our drinks outside on the ledge as we had no fridge. No problem. All in all it was a pretty good stay. If everything goes smoothly there is not much to remember but when you have little mishaps it is fun to laugh about. And now the name ASCOT always gets a laugh in our family. The same pictures on the walls of every floor.
