Travelcard or pay as you go Oyster?

by steve123x

Here's my upcoming travel situation:
--Will be in London for 7 full days,
--Will use the Tube for 7 consecutive days,
--Will travel only in Zones 1 and 2,
--Will need to travel in peak and non-peak hours,
--Am not interested in any 2 for 1 deals any type of travel card might offer. Only want the cheapest, easiest means of getting around in the above mentioned zones.
QUESTION:
Should I buy the7-day TravelCard or the pay as you go Oyster?
Thanks for any advice,
Steve

A frequently-asked question to which the answer, ultimately, is always 'it depends on your preferences'.

Have a look at this excellent page giving the pros and cons of each:

http://www.londontoolkit.com/briefing/travelcard_oyster.htm

Given that you want to travel in peak hours as well as off-peak, I'd probably go with the Oystercard and top up as necessary. But it's up to you.....read the page I've linked.

I think the travelcard would be more suitable for your requirements. If you take just 2 journeys a day across zones 1&2 (say 1 peak, 1 off peak) that would cost £28.20 on an Oyster which is more expensive than the current 7day travel card of £25.80

But you can load a 7-day travelcard onto an Oyster, of course.......

We recently spent 4 unplanned days in London because of the volcanic ash cloud and we loved the Oyster card. What we didn't use on it was refunded to us as we left London for our "real" destination. I can't compare because we didn't use the TravelCard and don't know anything about it. I just remembered hearing about the Oyster on Virtual Tourist so when it became apparent we were going to have to spend some time in London (not knowing how long), we got a couple Oyster cards and used them. They are very easy to use which was a big plus for two tired, frustrated travelers.

Travelcard. either as a paper card or an oyster card it will be cheaper for multi journeys over 7 days.

Leics - I dont understand your point. The question was which was the cheapest option and based on the info given the travelcard appears to be better value.

Steve123x - apologies, my maths were out - the basic 2 journeys a day on Pay as you go Oyster would £28.70 (even more expensive than I first worked out-can't count!).

I was just pointing out that you can put travelcards onto Oysters. It was merely an observation, not a critical comment.

Buy the 7-day TravelCard, it's easer and cheaper, then i'm visiting London i choose just Travel Card. Pay as you go can be better if you will go with train just few times per day :) but if you don't have detail plan - take Travel Card.

A 7 day paper ticket zone 1&2 this can be used peak or off peak.
Even though you are not interested in discounts it may grant you, if you purchase it at any station linked to a rail station you will automatically be able to get the 2for1 deals these are also available for theatre, restaurants & attractions.

Buying an oyster card and loading up the 7 day travelcard is just a waste of the GBP3 deposit. If you plan to travel outside of the zones you can purchase a zone extension cheaply.

Enjoy London Steve

Travel Tips for London

Naked, pregnant, no arms ...but 12 feet!!

by aaaarrgh

In September 2005 a new statue was unveiled in Trafalgar Square. It will remain on the 'empty' fourth plinth for 18 months. "Alison Lapper Pregnant", of an expectant disabled artist, is 12-feet high and made from white marble. Sculptor Mark Quinn wanted to represent a different type of hero - Alison was born with no arms and deformed legs but is a successful artist and parent.

IMO the idea of having a 'peoples' statue in Trafalgar Square is a nice one. There are too many statues of nobles and warmongers. And Alison Lapper is extremely brave to sit naked and pregant for all to see in the middle of London :-)

But it is not the first statue of a disabled person in Trafalgar Square - for example, look above you to the top of Nelson's Column where you will see a guy with only one arm, who was blinded in one eye!!

Greenwich Park

This is London’s largest park with a rand avenue, wide-open spaces, a rose garden and rambling, picturesque walks. It contains several historic sights, a café and a deer park called the Wilderness. Beautiful panoramic view to London. Nice place for photografs. :-)

If you are traveling beyond London, you might also check out the Great British Heritage Pass which includes a lot of the castles and houses outside of London (also Wales, Ireland and Scotland)

http://www.visitbritain.com/world/heritagepass/

or the English Heritage Overseas Visitors pass which just includes sites in England

http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/default.asp

Or the National Trust pass

Experince

One of the fondest hobby of mine was driving in the city area, especially at nights. What did it make so special? It was so much fun when I got to see into people's apartments/flats...if they didn't have curtains and the lightning was right, I happened to see many nice and beautiful interiors. Did you get what I mean?

Banksy

by biggeorge

If in East London keep an eye out for sarcastic stencilled graffiti , it's normally anti -establishment left wing stuff done by a guy called Banksy of homeless angels and police with smiley faces. No-one really knows what he looks like , he's like an artistic Jack the Ripper , but his work normally raises a smile amid the chaos of the city.
