No tea party

I have never commented on a travel website before but seeing a previous customer experience on tea at the Ritz I wanted to completely back up his experience. Twice I have been given vouchers for tea at the Ritz and twice the gift has turned out to be an expensive carboard box. I have never managed to book the tea because they are always fully booked, (or at best only have one vacancy which is near impossible to match the one off chance with my also being free) and the offhand, rude staff make sure that regularly phoning up to try and find a vacancy is only likely to make one feel even more abused. the vouchers are a complete rip off - there is no discount for the Ritz having the money up front, and why should there be an expirey date, they have the money for the voucher, since when did cash expire? Most importantly I would like to know how many vouchers they sell and how many slots they actually have available? If I have had the same experience two years ago and then one year ago and this chap has had the experience as well how many more of us out there have been cheated and how much money is the Ritz hotel making out of people who have bought these vouchers and have not been able to use them? its a miserable and mean swizz and should be beneath a world class hotel with supposedly British values.

Beware buying Tea at the Ritz Gift Voucher!

Be careful before buying a Tea At The Ritz voucher as a gift. This is my experience of The Ritz Hotel and their arrangements for reserving a table for their famous Afternoon Tea.
My wife had not been very well and so a very dear friend gave us a kind gift, being a voucher for Tea for Two At The Ritz. I think he got his idea from seeing The “Ritz” Cow that we bought at a Sothebys charity auction to support the wonderful helpline for distressed and “at risk” children known as ChildLine. The “Ritz” cow is now positioned on a lawn at our home. Prior to this it used to stand directly outside of The London Ritz Hotel as part of London’s “Cow Parade.” It is blue and gold. Every time I see it, I'm now reminded of the Tea At The Ritz we have never received.
I tried to book Tea at the Ritz using the voucher but there was never availability when I tried to arrange to use it. Tea at The Ritz is clearly big business and a very busy affair. There is a 12 month expiry date on the voucher and it has to be used before this fairly short expiry date. Why is that I wonder? I mean….The Ritz were paid for the Afternoon Tea when the voucher was bought….they enjoyed the use of the purchase money…..why should it have an early expiry date? Why should these vouchers not be valid for five years or even ten years?
Even London parking vouchers once purchased from local councils can be used for years.
Anyhow, when I finally managed to book, after my wife had been too ill for some months to go out anywhere…..and told The Ritz that we were using our voucher, a snooty sounding woman, in a tone that could freeze the entrails off a rabbit, informed me that we could not use our voucher which was now useless, because it had expired. I was so irritated that I did not proceed with the booking as I had no intention of allowing the Ritz to charge twice and she was clearly not prepared to budge. I then spoke to a more senior manager who politely but firmly put me in my place.
All I now have is a worthless piece of paper and the Ritz has my friends’ payment IN FULL for an Afternoon Tea.
When my friend purchased the voucher for me, he paid by credit card. I have only just informed him that we were never able to use the voucher. He has confirmed to me that when buying the voucher he was certainly not advised by The Ritz that he had a 7 day “cooling off” period nor was he advised that the voucher was only valid for 12 months. He has now told me that had he realised that, then he “would not have wished to impose such a gift on me, knowing how poorly my wife then was and that we also don’t live in London and rarely visit London together.
In the UK, the purchase of goods and services over the Internet, by phone or by mail order generally is subject to the Distance Selling Regulations. One of the most important implications of these regulations is a cooling off period of 7 days during which you have the right to cancel. My friend should have been informed by The Ritz at time of purchase of the voucher but he was not. I’m now advised by a department within the Office Of Fair Trading that it is illegal not to inform a consumer when buying over the telephone that there is a cooling off period.
The frantically busy Ritz Tea Operation provides 2 hour time slots in which to have your Traditional Afternoon Tea in the posh setting of the London Ritz, starting at 11.30am with the last slot being at 7.30pm. Oscar Wilde's Lady Bracknell would surely have considered the socially acceptable hour for Afternoon Tea at The Ritz to be half past 3 o'clock. Many people would. As for Tea at The Ritz at 7.30 in the evening, this is ludicrous. I consider even 6.00pm to be a time for cocktails, not Afternoon Tea! The only times and dates that I was ever offered when I tried to use my voucher were totally useless to me.

I’m hardly surprised that there is a “high demand” for Tea at the Ritz service given they accept reservations: on the internet; via travel agents; via various web-sites; via agents; they cater to residents; accept telephone bookings.....as well as selling unlimited gift vouchers to unfortunate people who have to then scramble around trying to reserve tables before the voucher expires.
Every single time I tried to reserve a table in advance for my wife and I, the Ritz staff told me that none were available for when I wanted when in fact it seems that tables are always available. I understand that The Ritz keep tables available for hotel guests who may decide to take tea at very short notice. Perhaps the Ritz should suggest to hotel guests at the time they make reservations for accommodation that if they hope to enjoy Tea at the Ritz they also book it early, instead of taking full payment in advance from those purchasing gift vouchers and then considering such people third class citizens, to fill in the gaps. A senior manager has suggested that I should have kept calling in the hope of picking up a cancellation! Does he not realise that people have a life?
I do not feel it is acceptable for my wife and I to have to travel up to London to have tea at a date and time to suit The Ritz and furthermore I would expect to enjoy tea at The Ritz when I plan to be in London in the first place, as part of our day. Given how very difficult it is to reserve tea at The Ritz, it makes the limited 12 month validity period rather unfair.
Last week I went online to The Ritz website and tried to book a table for two for Tea at the Ritz giving more than the indicated 12 weeks notice. First I looked at the current month of August 2011 on their Tea reservation system and I found that a number of dates have a red cross through them. I presume this means that these dates are fully booked. I then moved on through the online Ritz Tea booking calendar to the month of November 2011 where there are no red crosses blocking out dates. I then clicked randomly on November 19th 2011 with the intention of seeing if it was possible to book a standard Tea for Two. A notice appeared stating, “Unfortunately there are no more tables available online for your requested time and date.” November 19th was my first random choice to attempt to make a test Tea reservation at the Ritz at more than three months notice after reading on their website that booking 12 weeks ahead is advised. November 19th was in fact more than 14 weeks in advance! What is going on?
I wonder just how many Tea at the Ritz vouchers, valid for only one year, have been sold and not redeemed? I wonder why they have such a short valid date window for people paying for Tea in full, in advance when it is clearly so difficult to book for Tea at The Ritz? The M.D. of The Ritz has declined to answer.
This senior Ritz executive has claimed to me that demand for Tea at the Ritz is managed "efficiently.” I can only assume following my own experience, that this means that they are doing so in a way to maximise profits for the owners. Their methods certainly are “efficient”..........Tea at the Ritz appears to be run conveyer belt style, as if it was a Disneyland attraction. Other top hotels in London allow customers to take as long as they like over tea.
Tea at the Ritz is big business. I calculate that it brings them around £11,000,000 per annum….there are 5 of what their M.D. calls “Traditional Afternoon Tea” sittings per day, every two hours from 11.30am to 5.30pm. Given this massive income they can easily afford to make vouchers valid for far longer than one year.

Luxurious but very expensive

If you want to experience true glamour then The Ritz is definitely for you. It's like stepping into the dining hall of Versailles with gold and crystal dripping from the walls and ceilings. The service is excellent but I really feel you should save your money (£500 for 4 persons including wine). However, I would recommend you visit The Ritz at least once in your life just to experience a time gone by. The quality of the meal and overall service was average.

Unique Quality: Tea at The Ritz is an institution in itself. A choice of seven varieties of tea, finely cut sandwiches, freshly baked scones, jam and clotted cream and a range of delicate pastries, combine to make for an unforgettable afternoon.

Attention all backpackers....

Tired of roughing it at some dumpy dirty hostel. Save up and splurge on a few nights at The Ritz in London.
No sharing a bathroom down the hall or being woken up by the snoring of the total stranger tourist that is booked in the same room with you.
Well worth the hundreds, if not, thousands dollars a night I would say.
That's why they have credit cards...

Unique Quality: I am sitting on a couch of one of the luxury suites. Did I stay here when I was in London? Nope. I couldn't afford a stay in the broom closet.

More about The Ritz Hotel

Old and Young Impressed by the Ritz, London

by TripAdvisor Member whalloper

In March I found it necessary to travel to London on a corporate expedition. The trip invovled entertaining guests, so made a booking at the Ritz. Obviously, anyone visiting the Ritz for the 1st time is excited, but I decided to take my mother along for the trip.

The Ritz, according to previous reviews may not welcome visitiors. I welcome this wholeheartedly. The staff at the hotel have only one desire - the thorough well being of the guests staying at the hotel. They are proud of being the most secure hotel in the world, and this is evident everywhere you look.

We stayed in a lovely suite overlooking Green Park, Buckingham Palace and Picadilly. The suite could not have been more wonderful. While, as a 23 year old man I was impressed by the range of beers in the mini bar and the impressive massive plasma television, my mother was equally as amazed by the wonderful antique fabrics, the brilliant curtains and the bath in which a submarine could be floated.

The food and drink at the hotel are expensive, and their is no getting away from that. It is, in my opinion not unreasonably priced given the amazing quality of it and the speed at which it is served. The breakfast is exquisite and dinner menus rival the Ivy and the best hotels around the world.

In my opinion, the biggest asset and benefit of staying at the Ritz is the staff. They are amazing. The concierge got us brilliant seats at 8 hours notice to watch Mary Poppins. He managed to get us the best seats in the house (my mother was shocked to discover that she had to sit next to Donald Sutherland)

The door staff and concierge are legends and when I am in London again, would not hesistate to stay at the Ritz.

If you can afford it, the Ritz is wonderful. If not, get a new credit card and stay there. It truly is the most brilliant place to stay - go with high expectations and you will not be dissapointed.

I stayed at the Ritz Hotel in December for a one night stay, on my way through London to Japan. I spend about 30 nights per year away from home and have stayed at many wonderful hotels, so I do regard myself as therfore being capable of an unbiased review. The public areas of this hotel are, absolutely superb, the lobby is gorgeous and very old world, the Rivoli bar is very elegant and almost over the top but the walnut wall paneling with inlaid Lalique crystal is superb and definately worth going to have a drink. There is a high level of formality here at the hotel which means that to enter the bars and restaurants you will require a jacket, some people find this a bit too stuffy however I think it helps to create a very nice atmosphere. i have also had dinner here in the hotels restaurant (not on the night I stayed) and can say that this is one of my favourite dining experiences in London and again I would suggest that everyone must try this at least once in their lifetime.

However, Staying at the hotel is a huge dissapointment, while the public areas of the hotel are superb, the rooms leave a lot to be desired, nearly every room at the hotel has furnishings that are unique to that room, however I have seen three rooms in the hotel (all standard rooms) and they are all very tired, the bathrooms are very plain, the room systems such as television and non existant sound system are very very low grade and outdated. The airconditioning system was faulty and was so old, it was very hard to regulate the room temp... it was either too hot or too cold. As a hotel guest the service also left a lot to be desired, staff here seemed to forget that they were employed to assist guests and seemed to beleive that they owned the hotel. I also received a call two hours before check out time and was asked when I would be checking out and then had someone knock on my door to again check tell me that the check out time was 12.00 and since it was now 11.00 would I be checking out soon. The particular evening that I stayed at the hotel I elected to have room service for dinner and ordered a club sandwich. The club sandwich that was served was more akin to something bought at a football match and would be the plainest club sandwich I have ever seen served in a so called 5 star hotel.

By the time I checked out of the hotel I was convinced to never again stay at this hotel, which can only be described as outdated and certainly resting on its laurals, old world and antique does not need to equal bad service and tired out dated rooms. I would suggest to anyone coming to London, to stay elsewhere but do go to the Ritz to enjoy their restaurant and bar without the need to accept their low grade rooms.

If one is looking for a unique London hotel experience I would suggest The Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge, Very English, very discreet, pretty rooms and fabulous relaxed service.

I expected more

Apart from the public spaces ,which are very elegant and impressive. The rooms are not so spacious although quite confortable: TV and stereo equipment could be better,I expected more from the room service. Afternoon tea worth visiting. The real PRO is the restaurant

Very rude - don't like visitors

by TripAdvisor Member LondonLady

We stopped at the Ritz on our recent trip to London to have a drink in the bar. It was at 10:30 on a Friday night! Apparently, they try to keep out anyone not staying there because the bar closes to the public by 10:30 PM and you cannot get a drink or even a cup of coffee. The staff was very rude to us and once they told us the policy they turned their backs on us. I have stayed at the Ritz hotels before and have found them okay, not anything exceptional, plus they charge you for every little thing. Anyway, don't stop here to spend your money, they don't want it.

Afternoon Tea at The Ritz

by TripAdvisor Member sparky21

I would highly recommend this as a treat for someone special. Its expensive if you purchase it through the hotel direct but (---) do some fabulous deals! The sandwiches were nice, crust cut off and into a rectangular shape with 4 different fillings - Cream cheese and cucumber, cream cheese and smoked salmon, chicken and mayonnaise, and ham. Scones and jam, and then very dainty little pastries. They re filled as much as you liked, you can certainly get your moneys worth! It was also my birthday and i had it played for me on the piano with a free birthday cake! The staff were so friendly and polite, you feel quite humble. Get to the first sitting however, as after that there are queues for the toilets and things but from 11:30 there is no one. The actual hotel itself is spectacular, and the Palm Court were afternoon tea takes place is very oldy worldy. All in all a lovely, and very different day out!

Rude, Rude, Rude

by TripAdvisor Member mackenzie1016

One of our planned visits while in London was The Ritz. Although we were staying at another 5 star Hotel, we made special time for a short visit. As frequent Guests of the Ritz Carlton , we couldn't wait to see this UK gem. Boy--were we shocked at the greeting we received. We entered the Lobby area and were rudely spoken to by someone (apparently worked the Lobby area) and asked "May I help you"?. We explained that we were past guests of the Ritz Carlton and wanted to view the Lobby and restaurant and perhaps reserve Tea--- he scolded back at us replying that this Ritz has nothing to do with Ritz Carlton and any further questions were to be directed to the reception area (off on the side of the Lobby). The reception clerk explained that they are an independent Hotel but use Ritz marketing. So that is why they are so different than our Ritz Carltons that we have frequented and so love? We couldn't believe the rude reception that we and our Friends received-----walked out ---no afternoon tea and will never return !

Tea Time, where to go?

by CinemaFreak

My girlfriend and I are going to be in London from May 7th(Friday) to the morning of May 11th(Tuesday). I would like to have an official Tea while we are there. Where should we go? What is the cost? Thanks for the help!

Re: Tea Time, where to go?

The Ritz - of course! Is there anywhere else? :))) If you do a search for "The Ritz - London" you might find some info. I think it's around 64 GPB for two people and you might need to book in advance. Good luck!

Er - just noticed GPB - don't try to pay with those whatever they are!!! - they won't be accepted as legal tender ha ha ha! You should be ok with GBP (pounds stirling :)) Damned typos!

Hello:
We took tea at the Savoy last year. It required advance reservations, cost about L27 per person - and included a gurgling fountain of chocolate for all-you-can-eat strawberry dipping. Just one word of caution: if you are not used to the clotted cream (a topping for scones and muffins) GO EASY on it. This is not a food for delicate constitutions!

Re: Tea Time, where to go?

by leics

The concept of an English 'tea' is very much tourist-oriented. I'd never dream of paying the prices mentioned above (if you actually want to eat at the Ritz or the Savoy, that's fine .... but remember that you're paying for the name and the prestige)! There are many, many places where you can have tea, sandwiches, cakes, toasted teacakes etc etc for a fraction of those prices. Just read the menu (often in the window too) and choose what you'd like ....but remember, we ordinary Brits haven't taken 'afternoon tea' since at least the 1950's, and most people probably never did anyway. Oh, and a 'cream tea' isn't the same thing......the combination of scones, jam, clotted cream and tea is a West Country (specifically Devon) idea which has spread across the country as clotted cream (a local speciality) has become more available. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you enjoy your visit.

Re: Re: Tea Time, where to go?

by CinemaFreak

We have decided on the Ritz. Yes this maybe a tourist thing, but we feel we can not pass up the opportunity to say we took tea at the Ritz. We will of course check out other tea times at more local restaurants to compare. We will post our experiences when we return. Thanks to all for the posts. Maybe we will see you at tea!
