Hostel or Univ Accomodation
by mo_adam71
After a three year absence, I will be making my way to London again and am so excited abou this upcoming trip, transiting enroute from Nice to Singapore from 19 - 22 May. There are still quite a number of things I have to cover eg Somerset House, St Paul, Westminster Abbey, Camden Market etc....am giddy already!
Anyways, I just need a place to crash at night and to store my luggage safely as I have my laptop in it,and need to do this at peasaant's budget and have been swayed to book hostels from GBP 20 - 30 but the reviews over tripadvisor have been rather distrubing I must say eg Picadilly Backpackers, YHA Central. Then I thought of university accomodation like Westminster but can't seem to find the link or wondered whether they're up for business in May. Any other universities in central London one can advise, the link and whether they're safe?
So basically, a place to sleep and safely store luggage and laptop under GBP30 a night.
Thanks all.
Re: Hostel or Univ Accomodation

UK university accommodation is usually only available when the students are not there....which is not in May. Of course they are perfectly safe. Queen Mary's offers accomm, but not until mid-June:

There are more listed here:
http://www.budgetstayuk.com/venues/region/10/central-london
but, from a quick play, May dates are 'sold out'.... which actually means the accommodation isn't available at that time because of the students.
University accomm is a way of making money from rooms when the students are not there, simple as that.
I'm afraid your budget is low for the UK, and more so for central London, so you may well be limited to hostels only.
I would be wary of reviews on Tripadvisor, because anyone can post a review there (and there are many reasons for doing so).
Better to check sites such as www.hostelworld.com and www.hostelbookers.com where only people who have actually stayed in the hostel can post.

Super thanks. I will re-work the budget and will be checking the link you mentioned. Regards, Mo
Travel Tips for London
Cenotaph
by ratherton
Located near Whitehall, the Cenotaph is the focal point of Remembrance Sunday (11th November) every year in London. It is a memorial to all the British soldiers, sailors and airmen who have given their lives over the years in the defence of Britain. The 3 flags are (from left to right) – Navy Royal Ensign, Union Jack and the RAF flag.
Don't miss the all-inclusive British Museum

For paintings, you want the Victoria and Albert, the **old** Tate Gallery, and the National Gallery, but for natural history and archeology, this place is **IT.** Here's that Parthenon Gallery you've heard so much about, full of sculptures and friezes from the, mmmm, Parthenon.
In the footsteps of...

Finding a new area to explore is always one of the great delights of London. London is really a collection of villages, rather than a city.
I recently came across the following website that seems to offer a very well researched and detailed knowlege of every corner of the capital :

London Lampposts
by kris-t
I enjoy to take pictures of old Lampposts all over the world.... Do you know, that Brixton Market (a street market in the centre of Brixton, south London) was the first street in the UK to be lit with electric lamps?!
Absolutely not useful for a real VT-er!
by irisbe
I thought it was funny to find this pillar with "photo spot" on it.
Like if we cannot chose where to take our best pictures `-)
And for those who are VT-adicted and surplus for those who know --->me!, they will have no problem to understand why I had to laugh with such a sign :-)
Actually, I was walking the street with Azer and we were both puzzled what there was so special at that point to put on a picture, except the sign itself!
