Thistle Victoria: Good bones - Poor flesh    Check Rates

The Thistle Victoria has excellent bones. Unfortunately, it's the fleshy parts that fall short of the mark. I chose this hotel for a short stay in London in July 2004. This was my neice, Gabriella's graduation trip and her first visit to one of the World's Great Cities.

Our plane from San Francisco arrived early, 7AM and after a long, hot wait in the passport control lines at Heathrow, followed by an easy trip by car to the Victoria area, we were eager to check in and wash up a bit. Not going to happen. The check in desk told us curtly "Check in is at 2 PM". I explained that I understood this, but we had had an overnight flight and were very tired. Would it be possible to check in early? "Check in is at 2 PM". I think there was even a third time the sentence was repeated verbatim.

So, long story short, we dropped our bags with the concierge and went out to ride the big bus tour and see the sites in a seemingly effortless way. Returning at 2 we found a LONG line for check in. About an hour later we had our bags and were on our way to the room.

Elevator up. Bags dropped. Room stuffy. Window doesn't open. No airconditioning (that is available for another 39lbs). A ceiling fan provides a hint of air movement and we lay down for a quick nap. (It's been more than 24 hours since we woke).

I think we had both been asleep for 3 minutes when the fire alarm went off. We were totally disoriented and dragged ourselves out into the hall. There everyone seemed to be making their way down the stairs. We grabbed our purses and joined the parade; passing the fireman running UP the stairs on our way down.

The hotel staff directed us to the park across the street where we hung with the homeless and the kitchen staff until it was deemed safe to return.

Later there was an apology for the event on our TV screen messages.

Like I said, this hotel has great bones. The common areas are elegant and grand. The coffee lounge was beautiful and we felt like proper ladies when we enjoyed our coffee and tea in the afternoon.

Quite an extensive buffet breakfast is included but the line was much longer than I felt it was worth to wait to eat breakfast.

One of the best things about this hotel is its proximity to Victoria Station. There is an entrance into the train station off the lobby of the hotel.

The Harvard bar and restaurant was also comfortable and elegant. And very expensive. We had mojitos and salmon cakes instead of dinner after theater one night and the bill was a pricey 50 lbs.

  • The Thistle Victoria is right next to Victoria Station. This makes it a very convenient location. We booked over the internet and got a "deal".

After walking into the most amazingly beautiful lobby we waited at the desk. After checking in, the hotel receptionist explained that we were to go into one elevator, then get off the elevator at the 5th floor, turn right, turn left at the end of the corridor, turn right at the doorway and then turn left, and then take a second elevator to the 7th floor. This was perplexing but fortunately we met a very nice man on the elevator that was going to the same floor. The elevator kindly explained to us that we had reached our destination and that we should "Alight here". Very fun. A talking elevator.

Upon reaching our room, we discovered that it was small. Very. Adequate certainly. Clean, yes. But very very small, with scaffolding outside the window. While the room had everything we needed: a (small) bed, a bathroom with good water pressure, and that ever necessary trouser press (:)) it was a bit shabby (water stained wallpaper and thin blankets).

But after much walking, we slept very well here for three nights and were glad for the convenience of the location.

The breakfast is in quite a lovely "ball room" type area. What seemed to trouble the hosts in the breakfast area, was that breakfast was not included in our hotel fee. "You know that breakfast is not included in your room" they said sternly. (Ahh those internet deals). So we found ourselves explaining both mornings that yes, we were willing to pay for breakfast, but no we didn't want to pay cash now, and yes please put it on our room bill. And while breakfast was quite good, it was probably not worth the 18 pounds. (To my dismay I saw a small restaurant around the corner from our hotel offering a full english breakfast for only about 4 pounds).

We stayed at the Thistle Hotel at Victoria Station. It's a very nice hotel and the prices are a little below average for this part of London. The beds were a little uncomfortable, but we slept well. The rooms are nice and the staff was very friendly. I recommend this hotel for it's location and prices.

Just make sure to get a room above the 2nd floor or your view will be the inside of the train station. Even though I did not get to see the upper floor views, I bet they are spectacular.

It is connected to Victoria Station. So it is easy to catch a train, bus, taxi or the underground to where ever you want to go.

The Gatewick Express arrives & departs just a 100 meters from the Hotel Entrance, so you do not have to lug your heavy bags very far.

There are a lot of shops and restraunts inside the station. That makes it nice when you want to grab a quick bite or need something from the store.

The Hotel is very convenient for just about everything.

We booked this hotel for our last night in London, just because it is attached to Victoria station. The hotel itself is nothing special. It has a beautiful lobby but our room was old with a very uncomfortable bed. I think they are making rennovations to some rooms but ours was not one of new ones.

The good thing about this hotel is its location. If you have to catch a train from Victoria station....its location is ideal. From the lobby you can follow a corridor that leads inside the station.
Many attractions are within walking distance.
