NELSONS COLUMN
by kris-t
Trafalgar square is the busy heart of London full of pigeons and tourists...
Nelsons column comemorates the battle of trafalgar. Riotous new year celebrations take place here. It was built between 1840 and 1843 to commemorate Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It consists of a 5.5m (18ft) statue of Nelson on top of a 56 m granite column. The statue faces south, towards the Palace of Westminster.
The top of the Corinthian column is decorated with bronze acanthus leaves cast from British cannon. The square pedestal is decorated with four bronze panels, cast from captured French guns, depicting Nelson's four great victories.
Canary Wharf
by Mariajoy
Canary Wharf is the post-modern face of London, situated in Docklands. The fabulous history of the Docklands, from it's earliest beginnings in the 12th Century through it's hayday in the early 1960's and economic decline in the 1970's is told at the Canary Wharf History website in a time-line format.
Needless to say (from the photo) that the area has undergone MASSIVE rejuvenation over the last 20 years and is now an ultra-cool thriving business/residential/leisure area. London is ever changing and adapting. I love seeing new things evolving, and regenerating - London is exciting and unpredictable and thoroughly intoxicating. Every visit becomes a fondest memory!
For those on the "wild side" Blue Pirate Sex Shop
by Gypsystravels
It isn't uncommon to come across these sex shops in central London, mostly in the Leicester and Piccadily areas. They offer a wide range of "sex" items which is sure to please even the most discerning customers.
If you're in search for something "different" definitely pop on by and check out these shops, you just might find something totally unexpected!
South African House
by irisbe
At Trafalgar Square, you will spot the building on the picture.
It is the South African House and inside you will find the Embassy of South Africa.
I have been told that when Nelson Mandela was still imprisoned, there were often manifestations in front of it.
Lucky this is belongs to the past now, Nelson Mandela is a free man and it is peaceful around the embassy house now.
website of the South African Embassy. Moments of reflection:
As it was the scenery of many anti-apartheids demonstrations, it was primary chosen to put a 9 feet high statue of Nelson Mandela.
The idea raising money for the making of this statue belongs to Wendy Woods, widow of the anti-apartheid journalist Donald Woods.
Ian Walters made the statue but it is now located near the Royal Festival Hall.
I am sure you heard of the movie Biko about Steve Biko, one of Woods friends, who died in mysterious circumstances.
Nor Nelson Mandela, nor Steve Biko will be everf forgotten.
Biko's name is refered to on songs and movies:
1979: on the album “Tribute to the martyrs” by Steel Pulse is the song “Biko’s kindred lament”.
1980: Peter Gabriel’s song “Biko’s”
1987: Richard Attenborough’s movie: “Cry Freedom”
Star Trek Next Generation named a star ship USS Biko
1993: A Tribe Called Quest released
meeting people
by Cham
shaking hands as you meet someone is a given
one kiss on the cheek for opposite sex is normal amongst friends of a friend that you're meeting for the first time or people you know
a hug is normal for people that really know each other... but if you want to cause some havoc whilst your here when you first meet someone hug them... the English are very reserved and they will be shocked... but please if you're a guy don't do this because you're likely to get a kick in the nads.
