One of many hotels around Russell Square

Was hunting for a reasonable priced hotel as I was travelling with family. Needed a hotel with air-con (unless you find summer's heat wave a cute thing), a lift and ensuites.

The daily Full English Breakfast (included into the rates) was hearty - toast, eggs, tomatoes, bacon, bangers, mushrooms, cereal etc was well appreciated - nothing to better start the day with...though the monotony can be daunting after a couple of days...but if you have backpacked on a smidgen, this is glorious!

The room is a tad old, tattered and small...especially for a double or twin room. But I still could not understand folks who whined about the size of hotel rooms....unless you intend to fly thousand of miles to see the city you come to see from your hotel room. Except for a safe that does not work and missing a fridge of some kind, I have no major grievances for my room.

The crew was sufficiently courteous and helpful as well though the breakfast crew can get really pushed in the morning when every guest is piling into the cafe for breakfast and demands for tea and coffee crowded out the efficiencies of the crew.

The location, close to the British Museum and both Russell Square and Holbern stations (walking distances), is generally quiet at night, and comes with a reasonably good spread of restaurants offering mainly pub grub, Thai, Indian or Italian. In other words, modern English chow.

Unique Quality: Just a good place to rest the head for night and hop out the next day for whatever you plan to do...unless you intend to stay in the room all day all night, then perhaps, you'll like to fork out more dough for something ritzy.

I think you will be very lucky to get a reasonable Christmas dinner for that price. Maybe a turkey and cranberry sandwich :)

Re: christmas dinner

you might be able to get a "pie" (not the dessert kind but the dinner meal kind) over where the London Philharmonic Symphony plays. there's a hall there that's kind of exciting and they sell food there.

I think the pies (similar to pot pie with turkey, vegetables, stuffing) were maybe 5-10 british pounds. But food in London is awfully expensive if you're anywhere in the center of the city.

The Philharmonic Orchestra is located across the river Thames from Big Ben (that clocktower) . I believe Southwark (pronounced: suth-erk) is the London Underground station.

For that money you will not even get turkey droppings!

Re: Re: christmas dinner

well, maybe a small single serving of walker's crisps (the Indian Curry one was quite tastey according the very coagulation of my recollection)

Re: Re: christmas dinner

Actually the www.pierrevictoire.com does look quite good at £18.90 for three course meal. Don't expect any wine of course and then there is the 10% tax which will be included

The Waverley House Hotel does a 3 course dinner for UKL 14.95 - 17.95 per person. Details can be had from whhsales@aquariushotels.co.uk
