Mayor's Thames Festival & Fireworks

by dldkag

Hi,
I'll be back in London during the weekend of the festival, and I'd planned (prior to knowing the festival would be going on) to head off for Wales Sunday evening instead of Monday morning (my choice). I'm now debating about sticking around town for the fireworks, and just leaving Monday.
Has anyone been to the fireworks? Is the show worth it? Also, any general comments on the festival itself would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

I have been before and I really enjoyed it, the fire works display is not bad of course it doesn't last all that long but the south bank is buzzing its a great atmosphere. I think there are usually stalls on the southbank, music and entertainment. The floats and processions are amazing in fact I think I will be going this year.

Travel Tips for London

World's greatest skyline.

by Steve-H

From anywhere along the Thames you will be able to see something that you immediately recognise as being in London. One of my greatest pleasures is cycling along the embankment to Battersea Park for some exercise, on the way i took these pictures. The Thames is a wonderful place to be in the evening, along the embankment there bars on some of the ships anchored there, there are some great places to just sit and watch people go by and of course there is that skyline , it can only be London.

Greenwich Tourist Information Center

by rexvaughan

When visiting Greenwich, a stop at the tourist information office will be helpful. Just a short distance from the Greenwich pier or less than a 10 minute walk from tht Cutty Sark Docklands Light Rail station, it is in a lovely old building and has a nice gift shop as well as a wealth of information on the area. We picked up a very helpful map of Greenwich but they also do tickets for all the local attractions and all kinds of travel but also will help arrange lodgings if you want. There is also a gallery of local art for perusal and/or purchase and internet facilities you can use. There is also a small coffee/tea room where you can get light snacks

Lights, camera, action!

by phil_uk_net

Where do I start? London is vast. With someone who had never been before I'd start off in the main tourist areas of Leicester Square, Piccadilly, Covent Garden, Soho and Chinatown. After that Knightsbridge and South Kensington to visit the museums and to look at the architecture that is the legacy of Prince Albert. There is just so much to do and see. There is an excitement and vibrancy about London that never goes away. Even the smells from the street are very evocative and get me going as I emerge from the underground station!

Visit BUCKINGHAM PALACE and witness the CHANGING OF THE GUARD.
However, I arrived on a day when there was no CHANGING OF THE GUARD. Clearly, a signboard was displayed within the Palace grounds stating that NO GUARD CHANGING CEREMONY TODAY'.
You can see the displayed signboard on the left pix. Please click on the 3 in 1 pix for an enlarged view.
Crowds gather at 11.30am to see the CHANGING OF THE GUARD (May-July: Daily, August-April: alternate days).
BUCKINGHAM PALACE was built in 1803 for the Duke of Buckingham and became the London royal headquarters in 1837 when Queen Victoria left St James's Palace. The east facade was added in 1913. Eighteen of the 660 rooms have been temporarily opened to the public to raise money for repairs to the fire-damaged Windsor Castle.

Movie theaters: They have assigned seats, and if the ticket says 14:30, don't bother showing up at your seat before 14:30 like you do in the US! The person vacuuming the popcorn will look at you funny if you show up at 14:20.
