We are having tea in the Georgian Dining Room at Harrods one afternoon next week. The reservation confirmation requested "smart attire". What does that mean exactly for female adults - dresses? Dress slacks/fancy shirt? Suits? We would prefer to be as comfortable as possible. Thanks for your help.
Smartly casual trousers will do fine, pressed not crumpled, no backpacks, and certainly not ripped jeans or sneakers.
Don't worry, there's no need to be too formal. But best to avoid jeans. Bon apetit!
I was invited there once. It was a number of years ago, but I did wear jeans and a nice casual blouse. Clean and neat of course.
I've been there in jeans (but certainly not ripped). I don't think that they will ask you to leave if your attire isn't top notch, but it's more a matter of how you will feel if everyone around you is all dolled up and you're not.

I have been before for high tea and wore a dress, I think for ladies smart jeans may be acceptable but only with nice footwear. No trainers whatsoever and men to wear chino's not jeans.
London is without doubt one of the world's premiere music scenes, and most of the famous acts on tour will make an apperance, including... 'Queen'.
Having been too young (plus living behind the iron curtain) when 'Queen' last played live with Mercury, I never thought there would be another tour... Let alone that I would manage to get in :))

Didn't know where else to put this...so here it is! In "general" tips!
Are you an international student trying to find work in the U.K.?
First things first:
You need to be a full-time student (40+ hours) and need to be attending an accredited school. You need a letter from your school to show customs. You need to get a CODE 2 stamp in your passport that says "no recourse to public funds". This stamp allows you to work up to 20 hours a week.
Once you have this stamp, you need to allocate a job. That's the easy part.
Then you need to speak with the employer. Get a letter from them stating that you officially are being offered employment.
You take this letter, your passport, the letter from your school saying you're a full-time student, PLUS 2 official documents proving your permanent location (your original home location...possibly your parents?).
You need to take these documents and schedule an appointment for an identification appointment at your location Job Agency. Make an appointment to get a NATIONAL INSURANCE number. You cannot work legally in the UK without this number.
Once approved, you will be given a TEMPORARY NI #. This will be used by your employer in order to file your papers properly and then you can begin working.
Make sure your employer understands that you don't get your PERMANENT NI# for a few months and that your TEMPORARY NI# will have to do for now. Some employers just don't listen.
Summary: Code 2 in passport, school letter, and NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER.
It's that last bit that always gets everyone.
St. Giles's Cripplegate was one of the few City churches to make it through the Great Fire of 1666, but it was not so fortunate in the twentieth century. This medieval church which has been heavily "restored" and basically re-created - first by the Victorians in the 1800s, then by modern preservationists in the late twentieth century. (St. Giles was heavily damaged by bombing during World War II.) The church is a survivor - and its presence next to the Barbican Tower Blocks is suggestive of the way in which London itself has its own geology, layers of the past piling upon one another much like the strata of metamorphic rocks.
Incidentally, the "Cripplegate" in its name has nothing to do with people on crutches. A medieval word, "creple," refers to an underground passage beneath a fortified wall. A street - or "gate" - ran next to this tunnel, hence "creplegate".
More of interest: the great poet John Milton is buried here, his resting place marked by a stone inside the church. Also buried here is the Elizabethan explorer Sir Martin Frobisher.
At the end of Pall Mall is the Palace of St.James, a redbrick tudor house built by King Henry VIII for his second wife Anne Boleyn - before he chopped her head off.
This is where Prince Charles lives, along with his sons William and Harry. You can tell if they are at home, as there will be two of the Royal Scots Guards outside in those little follies, whereas if there is only one, Charles aint in. Incidentally, the Queen's Court is known officially as the Court of St.James, not the Court of Buckingham Palace or anything else, and it is here that the Guards go when changing the Guard at Buck Palace - here and Wellington Barracks, on the other side of St.James Park.
The Palace is haunted by a ghost of a man who slit his throat here years ago, by the way. Anne Boleyn, headless Anne, she also is said to haunt it's spooky corridors. Beware Charles, 'tis a very cutthroat business, living here...
UPDATE!!! when The Queen Mum died in 2002, Charles decided it was best not to live here any more, and moved next door to Clarence House. But this palace is much cooler.
I just couldn't help it but the building seems to melt like real ice-cream!
I found the communication between the plastic ice-cream balls of the car and the modern building leaning over really heart melting :-)
They are both dreaming they are real ice-cream balls !
