Now the Ibis Budget

Bad (2.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on October 24, 2014

I stayed at the Ibis Budget Salford Quays (formerly Etap) in October 2014 for two nights with my sister. We stayed in a twin room which was for a very good value price of £59 for both nights for the two of us. Having stayed at the Ibis Budget in Southampton before, I was optimistic that the accommodation would be OK for us, however, the 'cocoon' room as it is billed is quite uncomfortable. The beds were hard and the door to the room (503) was very stiff to open. There was also a large gap underneath the toilet room door and the walls were paper thin which meant you could hear your neighbours and people in the corridor very clearly. Not great, especially if you are there for the weekend when people are returning to their rooms at all hours.
Overall this hotel is definitely a case of getting what you pay for, very basic and functional but suitable only for two nights at the most.

Unique Quality: On the plus side, the location of the hotel is really good. It is a short ten minute walk to the Lowry, BBC Centre and the Imperial War Museum and is only a couple of minutes walk from the Salford Quays tram stop which is ideal for connections to Manchester city centre and beyond. We had our breakfast at one of the 3 restaurants ideally situated over the road.

ASTOUNDING VALUE

PLEASE NOTE: This used to be the Etap Hotel, but is now owned by the Accor Hotel Group and called the IBIS Budget Manchester.

I have to admit that I do avoid Accor owned hotels like the plague after 3 incidents in 3 countries. This hotel, however, is excellent. For £30 ($46) you can stay just across the street from the tram to take you wherever you want to go in Manchester. Even if you come back late in a taxi, you are probably going to pay £5 or less to get back. The hotel is quiet, has its own car parking (get here early or by train), and has reasonable rooms. The staff are nice and when I asked for a corner room, the appropriate key appeared (room 406). My room was reasonable sized, had an ok mattress, efficient bathroom facilities and was very good. This is not a bad place to share a room. I had ‘bunk beds’ with a single on the top and double/twin at the bottom. The shower and toilet are in spate rooms so you can use the room without too much hassle.

It’s even located cross from a massive pub with a full restaurant menu. An excellent bargain for a night out in Manchester.

Unique Quality:

HOTEL OVERVIEW
• 210 non-smoking and climate controlled rooms
• WI-FI
• 25 Car parking spaces (small charge, get there early!)
• Wheelchair access and 14 reduced mobility rooms
• Non-smoking hotel
• Built by someone else so even the bastards at Accor can’t mess this up
