Real Ale Inns, with Accommodation if poss

by Mardai24

Hi, For my husbands 50th next February I've managed to get my hands on tickets for a Man U game - he's been a massive fan since the 1960's. He also loves Real Ales and I would appreciate any help on accommodation in the city or near Old Trafford that serves real ale. Alternatively, somewhere in the city that serves real ale with accommodation close by. We tend to prefer the smaller venus for accommodation rather than the big multi national hotels. Anyone got any good ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Hi, Welcome to VT.

I stayed in the Piccadilly Gardens Hotel last year, which was pretty central, and within walking distance of some of Manchesters Tetley Heritage pubs - traditional pubs with character, that serve Real Ales.
This is my tip on the hotel http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/6f35e/4b66b/3/

It's also a couple of doors away from a Wetherspoons pub.

I don't know if your husband is aware of this site- A Football and Real Ale guide-which lists recommended pubs in Manchester (and other cities/ towns with a football team)

http://www.footballandrealaleguide.co.uk/162852/149100.html?*session*id*key*=*session*id*val*

I hope this is of some use...

For a friendly real ale boozer which does accommodation I'd reccommend the Salutation on Higher Chatham Street which is behind the Northern College of Music on Oxford Street.

I haven't stayed here but it is a cracking pub and fairly central.

Both the previous posts are very good options, although I would suggest the Piccadilly Gardens Hotel as it is more centrally located and the tram stop at Piccadilly Gardens will give direct access to Old Trafford.

Sorry I can't help. I had to read your question a few times before I realised that Real Ales wasn't a Spanish football team! Bruce PS If you're ever in Dundee try the Fisherman's Tavern at Broughty Ferry. Excellent real ale pub with lots of character.

Hi, thanks for the responses. I haven't been logged in for a while, hence the delay in replying.

I've taken all the notes and recommendations and will try to do a bar crawl on one of the days! Will let ye all know how we get on - if our livers survive!

Cheers and thanks again.

Help clean the streets!

In 1996 Manchester was bombed by the IRA, in hindsight it was probably one of the most fortunate events to happen in Manchester in the last decade.
The redevelopments that have taken place since are almost complete.

Packing List

Ok remember you are in England...

you know..when we are in your country (If you are in a hot country), we are the ones's in bikini's, whilst you have your jeans and polo neck jumper..

.. we are desperate, we don't get much sun....so, dont be surprised on a cold winters night to find the woman wearing very little and the lads braving it in a t.shirt, yes in winter too! lol, sad eh...

..so girls bring your 'batty riders' and guys, be ready to brace your pecks through a nike t.shirt.

You can buy fashion clothing very cheap compared to say..Jamaica, and some of the European countries I have been to..

if you are a party animal and want a couple of disposable cheap raunchy outfits for a night out, get down to the markets, there is one in Central Manchester, Longsight market, Hulme market, Stretford Arndale..

..also if you like designer clothes...go to Selfridges in the Trafford Centre, there are often sales on and I recently bought some Katherine Millen half price.

If you don't possess a coat, because you are lucky enough to be a hot climate cousin, then borrow/buy or steal one..or bring Jumpers/sweaters etc..

dont just bring jeans if you want to go clubbing, you will need shoes and trousers, possibly shirt and tie if you go to those kinda clubs. Umbrella, always a good accessory..

Anything you dont bring you can pick up cheap in 'Super Drug' or the many £1 shops...

..otherwise Boots has a vast array of toiletries, makeup, camera stuff, medicines etc.

Be careful carrying photographic equipment,

I really would be careful about not carrying cameras around your neck etc, also...

..keep an eye on your mobile/cellulor phone...don't keep your wallet peeping out of your back pocket, chaps. a warm jacket/coat/man whatever ;-)

Listen up chaps and chapesses..dont ever listen to us English people if we say to you

...its hot here! If you are travelling from somewhere hot, ie Jamaica, South America, Africa etc etc..you will be cold!

I remember my ex partners Jamaican mother saying she sat in the house with a quilt wrapped round herself for the fist couple of weeks when she moved to England...

we may be swanning around in our underwear, but hey notions of warmth are all relative..be prepared!!

The Lowry

by tvor

The Lowry is a brand new arts complex with galleries, a huge theatre and eateries. the visual look of the building is stunning as well. Unfortunately the day i saw it, the sky was gun metal gray and the building more or less faded into it. It truly is an amazing building. It houses the L. S. Lowry collection. Lowry was a local Manchester area artist during the first half of the 20th century and is known for his gritty and realistic portrayals of everyday Northern life and landscapes.

There are other exhibitions as well in adjoining galleries. the theatre is beautiful as well and puts on a wide variety of performances. The day we were there, there was a matinee 'Of Mice and Men' for a theatre full of students.

Nearby is a huge shopping center and across the quay is the National War Musuem North branch so more to see there once you've done the galleries or seen a performance. Probably the easiest way to get there is the Tram getting off at the Harbour city stop and walking across a footbridge, past the multi storey car park. There are also busses. See the website for more directions

hustly & bustly shopping.....

by WAHEEDASLAM about Arndale Centre

In the heart of the Manchester is this great shopping centre. From the street shopping to indoor shopping everything is there. you can buy anything from here from toys to clothings. There is also a "FOOD CHAIN" upper mall of the shopping centre with fast food resturants like Macdonalds & Kfc. There are many shops selling clothes(designer wear). the best place to do cloth shopping is Ath liesure inside the hall. Well my favourite shop is "Gadget shop" selling gadgets of all kinds. I am sure you love it too.... you can spenp up to 100 pounds on shopping here whioch will be enough but plz choose different items carefully as they are pricer different in every shop..
