Manchester Airport Security
by john9159
Hi,
Not been to the airport since January but had heard that new measures are to be put in place.
Have there been any new security measures implemented such as biometric eye scanning, luggage checks immediatley on entry to the airport (i.e. at the entrance doors) and/or others?
Thanks

Am curious as to why you want/need to know this.
It's always best to allow plenty of time for check-in and security. New measures may be implemented at any time. Even if someone responds who flew from Manchester yesterday there is no guarantee that the same measures will be in place when you want to fly.
Manchester is one of the airports which has lifted the 'one piece of hand baggage' rule:

The biometric trial at Manchester airport is only for people who have biometric passports. If yours does not have a chip you will not be affected.

Each time I have flown from any UK airport the security system has been slightly different. That is as it should be, imo.

Leics - Strange you should ask why they want to know about increased security. I was wondering that as well.

Could be very innocent but, like you, my imagination is working overtime! This from a man who is continually telling his wife that she's got an overactive imagination.

Well, he got no info from me he couldn't have found by googling. As is so often the way..........

I belong to another forum that is as worldwide as is this one. I get no end of questions relating to my university that could so easily have been answered by the poster searching the web site.
I'm not sure if they want the info' straight from the horse's mouth, or if it's plain laziness on their part. The latter I feel.

If you are unable to answer a simple question then kindly stop hijacking my posting and making stupid comments!

There are no baggage checks at the door, you have to go to chek-in.

I answered your question, to the best of my ability, very quickly.
You did not respond for quite some time (9 days), which caused me to have some concerns about your posting. It still seems an odd question to ask.
The thread has not been 'hijacked' in any way.

Heh John, go easy mate. Why get all heated up over replies? We did post replies but you never even bothered to log in for the answers! Had you done so then we could have replied more fully.
If you post a question then it makes sense to return to the posting to look for answers. If you don't answer us, then expect people to speculate!
Travel Tips for Manchester
Coronation Street
by tvor
Manchester is the home of Granada Studios which produces Coronation Street, a long running British soap. It first aired on Dec. 9, 1960 and is still going strong. I am a dedicated Corrie fan and I have met most of my interenet friends through the corrie communities online. Granada used to have set tours open to the public but stopped that in 2000.
Granada is near the Irwell and across from Salford and you often see actors in the shops in that area as many of them live in Salford Quays. Liz Dawn, who plays Vera Duckworth, owns a pub a few blocks from Granada. It's up Quay street and just off on a small side street. The walls are covered in photos of Liz and many cast members, past and present. I stopped there for lunch one day hoping against hope that an actor might pop in for their dinner but no such luck :) the food wasn't bad at all though so still worth a stop if you're a fan.
You can buy a few Coronation Street souvenirs in the main tourist information center in St. Peter's Square by the Town Hall. Past Times occaisionally has a few related items.
You can have a peek at the outdoor set from the top floor of the main building of the Museum of Transport and Industry in Castlefield, at the back of the kids' discovery center exhibit. Best memory: Getting to be on the outdoor set!!!
Christmas in Manchester
by tvor
From Mid November until the week before Christmas, Manchester is buzzing with all kinds of great things. There is the famous winter markets which is the big draw. The main European market is in Albert Square in front of the looming tower of the Town Hall. The German market is in St. Ann's Square and there are extensions to the markets from Brazenose Street, New Cathedral Street and Exchange Street. Find arts and crafts, gifts, food and drink to sample and bring home for holiday cheer!
Check out the various light displays in the city center
Go skating in Piccadilly gardens until just after New Year (Need to buy a ticket)
Ride the Manchester Wheel (need to buy a ticket)

IF you can manage it, see a football (soccer) game in Manchester. The crowd atmosphere is absolutley amazing. And so long as you're not wearing the wrong colors Man City (Light Blue/White) Man U (Red, Black, White) You're fine.!
Manchester Cathedral
by jayhawk2000
'Prettified' by the Victorians and bombed in the Blitz, inside you'll find some fantastic wood carvings. Its surroundings have been prettified as well. They have built a visitor centre next door in an old Victorian building built atop 2 arches of an ancient bridge. A refectory, gift stop and interactive heritage exhibits. The streets around have been pedestrianised and turned into a new park with a new museum called URBIS.
Manchester's oldest building, a medieval half-timbered pub called The Wellington, has been relocated next to the cathedral after being set adrift for years in an ugly concrete shopping centre. The shopping centre itself was obliterated by the IRA bomb. Today the site is home to Marks & Spencer, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.
City Centre Cheap Deals
by orlikins about Arndale Shopping Center
Its basically a big mamma of a shopping center with lots of very cheap discount stores for cosmetics, home appliances. But you've also got the usual big-name British retailers there too. Man U t-shirts probably ;)
Saw quite a few "Cock of the North" t-shirts up there too!
