    Ramada Piccaddilly Plaza

    by

The Jarvis Piccadily is being rebranded (as of writing May 2008) as the Ramada Piccadilly. They are currently in the process of a major refurbishment, which is a good thing as for years this hotel has been a centrally located eyesore.

Prices start at 57 per room, per night going up to over 100 Friday, Saturday and peak times such as conference weeks. The hotel is a fairly standard business class hotel consisting of 14 stories, a restaurant and bar and parking facilities on site.

Rooms are of a good standard, with flat screen tv, comfy beds and excellent bathrooms with power shower and bath. They may be a little small for some people, but if you're used to European hotels this won't be a problem. Very clean, with good pillows (my personal gripe in many places) the rooms have been refurbished to a good 4 star standard though the site itself is still undergoing some upheavel. This simply means that the reception and hallways look a bit half finished and the building from the outside still needs cleaning.

Unique Quality: Staff were very helpful. I'd made a mistake while booking that could have meant I'd be paying 2 nights rather than one, but they happily rectified it for me without complaints. Breakfast is an additional 11.00 per person.

It couldn't be more centrally located, with shops, Chinatown, the Gay Village and Piccadilly train station on the doorstep. Has an unrivalled view over Manchester city centre. Parking in this area can be a real problem and not all hotels have their own parking. At the Ramada parking on site costs 7.50 from 2pm on day of arrival til 12.pm day of leaving, though it is up on the first floor, a bit awkward to access and a bit of a nightmare to exit.

Directions: Central Manchester, overlooking Piccadilly Plaza

    Worst Building In The City?

    by

I'm quite sure that once inside this hotel is as nice as many others in the city centre, but externally it's utterly terrible. A typical 1960's contrete monstrosity that's a blot on the city centre skyline. With all the redevelopment that's going on, it's a pity something better can't be made of this ;-S

Unique Quality: It's awful to look at!
On the plus side, it's in a good location, close to the city centre and to Picadilly railway station, chinatown, the trams etc etc.

  • A Dump

This place is totally depressing, with inefficient check-in staff, dirty windows that wouldn't open, questionable linens on the bed, etc. Bathroom was spacious and well lit but didn't make up for the rest of the room. It was built in the 1960s and there's probably a lot of asbestos around the heating system as well. I'll never stay there again.

    Cheap and fairly cheerful

    by

I always had the belief that if pilots stayed in a hotel it was bound to be good. This hotel has a separate lounge for airline crew and when I was staying the flight attendants and pilots from PIA were staying so it was bound to be good....right?
Well, the hotel was clean enough but was stuck in the 70's, it is a hotel in major need of a face lift! The hotel lifts had creaky doors and old fashioned buttons, the room doors had cracks and huge scratches, the room had some very dodgy furnishings but it was cheap (around £50 for a room with breakfast over Christmas) and couldn't be more central if it tried.
Breakfast was also good and had a great view over the main Piccadilly square (shame it was pouring down!)

Unique Quality: Location is a major plus for this hotel, close to the train stations, the shops and the main concert venues.
Price is also very good if you shop around online

Directions: Head to Piccadilly square you can't miss it!
